Yes, in a word. It prevents arsenic, nitrate, copper, and other delights of tapwater from reaching your tank and killing your fish...substances only one of which Prime removes.
You can buy ro/di water at the Walmart or lfs and lug the bottles at 69 cents or more each, or you can get a ro/di [get the higher end ones for about 200.00 if you possibly can] and have it produce hundreds of gallons of ro/di in your own house.

Light, Water flow in the tank and purity of the water you put into the tank are probably the top 3 items to be considered when starting out. In a word Yes ! RODI water is and will be critical to the overall success of your tank.

RO/DI water is what to have. Is it needed? No. You may have some more algae that blooms from not using it, if you use tap, you just need to be sure to use the dechlorinator things in it. I used tap water for a while, but then switched to RO/DI.

I say yes too...Take a look at my old sediment cartridge when I changed it(after maybe 7-8 month running on my RO/DI), it will show you what kind of crap you put in your tank if you does'nt have a RO/DI...(the new one is the white)
