hiding overflow in the rocks?

I was curious if one could just use pvc pipe connected to a bulk head on the bottom as an overflow. I am setting up my tank and am trying to hide as much equipment as possible and make the tank viewable from as many sides as possible. I figured i could have 2 of these and some returns all hidden by rock work.
