My Nuvo 16 containment system
4" high lexan barrier fitted around the perimeter of the stand. 1" drain hole fitted into the base of stand. Drain plumed to 20 Gal. plastic tub hidden under end table. I ordered a section of aluminum channel that I will affix to the top rim of the tank and secure it with 3m Marine 5200 sealant . This will not prevent the tank from cracking but it should keep the glass from spreading apart very far. Thus minimizing the flow of water out of the tank and into the catch basin I constructed. I also ordered an ALD module and probe for the Apex controller to sound an alarm and email me if it detects water in the catch basin. |

That is a nice safety net you have, but it is crazy that we feel like we need them. That is not how a product should perform.

I'm looking at nano reefs now as I'm hoping to get back into the hobby after 3 or so years out... I can't believe manufacturers are still having these problems...
I say still, because JBJ had the same problems with their 12 & 24 gallon cubes maybe 8 years ago... Amazing that another company is having the same issue on a very similar tank... Shame on them. Guess I'll have to come back into the hobby with a custom starfire cube ;-) |

To each there own. I'll take my chances without all that. For me whats the point if you have to build 2 tanks to contain it. If your that concerned, I would think you would prefer to just sell it?

I have heard they crack because of the thin glass and the rounded corners. I had just traded a mp10 for this tank and had it a week and I guess luckily had not had the time to set it up and was shocked to see it had cracked for no reason.

I wonder if people are having problems with the fusions.

So i just came across this thread and searched for more. Seems like this happens to IM tanks more often then they should? For me, even hearing one story of 16-24 gallons of water spilling everywhere is enough to deter me from wanting the tank.
As it would be my first salt aquarium, i thought it would be easier then not using an all in one. Any words to persuade me otherwise? |

I have one and have no issues.
There is no excuse for tanks breaking but its hard to tell if this is a real issue or not. Statistically, no one has done a proper count of the defect rate etc... Also from what I read, many of the breaks have been with tanks using vortech powerheads which shouldn't happen but the combo of a Nuvo and a Vortech should be avoided in my opinion. For the example of a tank breaking without water in it - I would not be concerned about that at all. Thats clearly not a water pressure etc... Glass doesn't jsut self-combust so something triggered it - possibly moving it days before / shipping etc... I guess some would say it better safe than sorry but I think its a great tank from my experiences.

Are nuvo 16's still cracking?
Nuvo 16 + MP10. Everything good.
It's peculiar though, that the guy on the last page had his tank crack on him sitting empty, but it looks like the tank was up and running for quite some time at one point, judging by the calcification on the back glass. What I'm getting at is that maybe these tanks (the ones that crack) have been mishandled? The tank is small enough for one guy to handle it, but it's still heavy and an awkward load. I almost dropped mine in the driveway while I was rinsing it out. Just a thought that it's possible no manufacturer defects even exist. Admittedly, I have not read this whole thread so apologies if I missed something.
