Are nuvo 16's still cracking?

Hi everyone,

Well, I just bought an IM Nuvo 16 and am scared to death about all of these stories. I have invested quite a bit of money into this thing already. It's not running yet. The reason I'm so worried is it will be in my room, around very expensive equipment. Question is, should I give it a go? Find an alternative?

Tank was purchased through my LFS and not shipped through UPS.

Any input to ease my mind would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Here's what I've said about it and what I will continue to say about it. The fact even one cracked should be shameful. But you take the number of stories you heard about them cracking, for me I've heard 4 stories, and consider how many have been sold and are up and running still. It's still a very rare occurrence. Frankly I'd be a little hesitant but not too worried about it.

Is it true that the larger models are more prone to failure?

I think the biggest problems were with the older models that had thinner glass. Most of the nuvo 24s that broke also had an mp10 on the opposite side. I know that is no excuse but that is what I have seen. I am currently running a nuvo 16 with mp10 and have seen no stress or issues. Keeping my figures crossed though.

The bigger ones are more prone because of larger water volume. The glass is 8mm and bent around the corners which thins the already thin glass, which is why the fusion series and bigger SR series have squared corners not rounded.

It just seems sad that we are relying on luck for our tanks not to crack. We should be confident in our livestock's safety and we'll-being. Hopefully I got a good one out of the bunch. There's really no turning back with the money I've put into it.

Is there anything that can be done to prevent this from happening, any signs to look for before it breaks?

It doesn't seem like there's been warning signs. Just people coming home to water all over. I agree it's rough. Try to put it out of your head and enjoy your tank. Do the basic pre set up checks. Level surface area, be careful stacking rocks..

Nuvo here as well. Quality seems good and I've been up and running 6+ months now. I would recommend for sure. I love mine...

Hopefully yours doesn't crack like mine. I'm just thankful the tank was cycling and I didn't have any fish or coral in it yet. I'm just hoping they replace it otherwise I'll probably get out of the hobby again until I get a full-time job.

Amen. That's where I'm at with mine. Got all my equipment upgraded specifically for the Nuvo16. Got about 30 corals in the tank plus two fish. There's nothing to do now but just keep pushing forward.

I have the 16 and 38 and both have been running over 1 year. No issues and will probably end up purchasing an 8.

I just want to make a quick point... and I am not taking anything away from the owners with cracked Nuvo's by any means, however, keep in mind we don't hear stories on reef forums regarding the hundreds/thousands of people with these tanks that have no problems. We only hear about it when something goes wrong. With this in mind I am sure it's a small defective rate when you look at the total sold vs total cracked. It's not acceptable by any stretch but thought it was worth mentioning to those with these tanks running problem free as of now.

Same with any other manufacture as well, we only hear about problems. Not often do we see "My brand X tank" has been running for 2 years problem free.

Again, I am not trying to take away from those with problems... I can imagine it's awful and I don't wish it upon anyone.

That's exactly what I've been saying. The problem looks compounded when you only here the bad stories.

Did you contact IM? If so what did they say?

Yeah I'm curious if they replace your tank. Dave (terrypercula) sent all the information into IM warrant department on Thursday and were still waiting to hear back.

since anything could happen at any time, to alleviate concerns about the tank being around equipment and such, maybe think about how you would minimize the damage from tank failure. Even with the best of tanks, there could be an earthquake/tornado/child with a broom handle/cat/dog, etc that could knock a tank over. Plan where you would put the tank and how you could protect everything else around it.

Not to minimize that the tanks cracking is awful - I can only imagine how upset people are, especially if the manufacturer isn't being very helpful!

Did you have any powerheads running attached to the glass?

I keep seeing nuvo breaking/cracking after having power heads installed. I'm going to take precaution and just upgrade my return pump to a much larger cobalt and let the return pump take the role of the powerhead.

I was fixing to setup my 16 on my PC desk since it would perfect and I already have a 5g pico on it until I started researching more on the self destruct mode that these tanks have. Yea a 16 g bomb next to my 2900 dollar laptop....ain't happenin lol
