leaving town for a week
i'm going to be going on a cruise and dont have anyone to watch my tank, i only have a cuc and LR with some star polyps on it . my question is should i lower the SG to like 1.18 or .19 before i go because of the evaporation that will take place over the week? it a 10g tank that has been running for about 5 weeks.

keep the lights and any fan you might have off for the week it won't hurt anything and should reduce the evaporation rate considerably.

If you still have time to set one up before leaving, you could just use a simple drip doser to feed water into your aquarium at the same rate that it evaporates. I use a 5 gallon kent marine aquadoser to replace topoff water for my aquarium. I have a 215G so I need to refill it about twice a week. It's very simple to use and so far mine has been foolproof. I believe they make a 2 gallon version and it could also be made as a DIY project.

My tank is in a basement that remains cool with high humidity, so I don't need to run any fans on my water- just a couple in the lighting fixture itself. I also only have power compact lighting because the only corals I keep are mushrooms, zoo's and polyps. Probably my main reason for little water evap is that I do keep a glass cover on my aquarium to keep a goldentailed moray contained. I had a local glass shop drill about a dozen holes in the top so air can circulate through- expensive to have the holes drilled, but it works.

IME, the sg will raise slow enough that everything will be fine. Just make sure to slowly bring it back down when you get back.

Your SG won't drop with an auto top off. It's really handy, and pretty easy to add one.
