I have pretty much given up on using the skimmer as HOB. I got it setup and as tight as possible, and it leaks pretty bad, even from the glued portion. I had an idea that it would leak, but I did not think it would be that much. Since my tank is not drilled I will have to put this on the shelf until I get a drilled tank and sump. My next purchase will be the D&D Typhoon. I still have hopes of using the ps160, but I guess I will have to wait. Thanks for all the help Luke.

The typhoon will work well. I was fiddling with my ps160, but no way was that going to HOB well. As an in-sump it is great, but for a cheap HOB I will stick with my typhoon.

Good Lord Luke you are a modding beast! I am interested to see how the recirc does. 20lpm (1200lph) ........man Via aqua should hire you..................................
P.S. What do you think about meshmodding a genx8500 to run my classic 400....sick of the whole king590 crap. |

I think the 8500 would be to much. I'd go with one 6000, meshed out with a custom venturi, you should be able to pull 25lpm with it and the flow will be about the same as with three 590's. With a 8500 you'd blow the top off! lol If i remember correctly the 590's were doin 5lpm, so you would be pullin 10lpm more with the one pump. But the only bad thing about the genx is i'm almost 100% sure your going to have teh same exposed metal. I just got a 4100 and its got exposed metal on it......alot! I sprayed it down with some black krylic fusion paint and it bonded rather nice, so I think it'll be good. But i put a few layers on it. You could always throw a wp1000 on there! lol

Here's your best price on a 6000 and 8500, but like i said, the 8500 is gonna be alot of flow. You'll have to cut down teh impeller to just some stix and mesh mod it, then get a pvc fitting and drill a 1/4" hole where the thread's run into the pvc addapter, and you'll be in the 45-60scfh ballpark. |

thanks luke, I have not looked at the back of the 8500 (afraid), but I guess that I will have to. I would get a 6000, just happened to have an 8500 45-60scfh would be great, but you are right it would probably be too much.

Well, are you going to run it with the same output from the skimmer already there? If its a 3/4" output into the skimmer it may work.....may? Its going to restrict the flow being so small, if you opened it up to 1/5" your going to be in a world of hurt so you'll just have to see. With such a big pump, if you cut down the impeller and make a venturi you may be able to get 35-35lpm with that guy! Let me know how it goes as that interests me. .......just make sure you tie a rope to your skimmer when you plug it in, you don't want it flying away!!! lol

I may play with this in the next few weeks, but who knows, I wanted to add a small needlewheel to my typhoon too.....never happened. If I do this I will take some really small pics and post them.

My favorite way to mod is in front of the tv with a beer next to me. I can be lazy and active all at once. But this is why i drill off my fingernails so much though....

Yes you did say it leaked, I wish i would have listened better. I would love to put a sump in without drilling, I just dont know what parts/overflow to buy. I have the room for a good size sump. The sump would need to be drilled twice or once? |

I spaced on why it might be hard for me to do a hang on return.
There is a portion of my tank that has been sectioned off for like a bioball wet/dry filter. http://img100.imageshack.us/my.php?i...3mediumvb2.jpg So that makes two Hang on Sections, the back hang on would just return into that wet/dry section and not the main tank.

why would that matter, wouldn't the watter just return back to the main tank at some point anyway?

OK, i'm on a roll with modding these skimmers(finally had some time) So i moved on to the ps160 finally and what a difference a simple mod will do, and to keep all happy, it won't cost you but a few bux, or free for me! lol. OK, real simple, take off the collection cup and get some plyers and rock the inner tube back and forth til it pops off, then pull it out and throw it out or keep it. Now get a 22 cent pvc fitting that is 1/2'male threaded and goes into 1/2' pvc. THen take a drill and drill in a 1/4" hole on the fitting right where the male threads end and the pvc fitting starts. A pic is worth a thousand words, so here's three. The skimmer is now 100% milked out and i look for it to be about the same as a oct 150. There should be no difference between the two. Besides the price tag! lol Enjoy, oh yea, its modded as its going to get so jbeltman or whoever, 55 + actual shipping, i'm done with it. Just wanted to mod it and show everyone how and now pass it on.
If you aren't getting that kind of foam in your riser tube, its not working correctly. |
