Toadstool Splitting!
When I got this about 6 months ago, it was roughly 3" round. After a month or so in my tank, I started noticing changes in the stalk. It was growing in diameter, becoming translucent, and clearly "thinning" in the middle. Within 2-3 weeks there were 2 stalks with a thin membrane between them. Then the top closed & shriveled up for 3-4 days, looked like crap, was sloughing off lots of what could only be called toadstool poop. I thought it was dying! When it finally opened, the top had split about an inch. It stayed open for a few days, then repeated the split process. You can see where the major (1-1.5") splitting took place in the picture & I am pretty certain it is getting ready to split some or all of that last portion over the next few days.

It's so cool to watch mother nature work like that! I had my toadstool for about 6 months when the same thing happened. A seam up the length of the stalk and head eventually split into 2 animals. Took place over a few weeks time. Now I have 2 beautiful toadstools and one of them appears like its beginning to show another one of those seams.

The toad sits at the top of the water column with medium to heavy flow. I change the direction of my primary flow a couple times a week because I believe change is good for the fish/corals/inverts & it helps keep debris from settling in the LR & LS. As a confirmed "over-feeder" nothing starves in my tank. I feed 2xdaily, mysis/brine/cyclops with garlic extract. DT's 2xweekly. I've got 3-4 other types of frozen foods that I alternate around too. Wet skimming, nightly fresh RO top off, weekly 3-6g water changes, a good clean up crew, sponges & algaes keep my water/tank clean. The back & one side of my tank is covered in pink coraline. The front & other side is left to the brown/green algae which I clean off randomly. This is the grazing field for my Lawnmower, so I tend to let it go. So, good lighting, lots of food & clean water did the trick in my tank! |
