Really sorry to hear about this. I saw your daughters thread and thought it was adorable!

Like others have said, try to get her to concentrate on the good responses and ignore the bad... easier said than done though, I'm 27 and can still get alarmingly shaken by nasty posters... and the ones here are great compared to many others!

A Young Reefers forum would definitely be a good idea. Give her a hug from me!

By the way, I thought the original thread was legit, but also wouldn't have been shocked if it turned out to be a joke post. Which is probably why I didn't bother posting in it.

In that case it'd be locked.

Which is what I wish more would do. I'm not above being sucked in myself.

I agree with the mods closing the thread. It was getting out of hand. All in all I think team RC does a great job at policing the board. I'm sure it's hard keeping track of the 2500+ members that are logged on at any given time.

I new the thread was legit. I could also kinda tell it wasn't her tank and that she was expressing joy to have something her and her father could do together. Well done getting her involved. This can be a great community. Just like every town there are trouble makers here too.

I read that thread and it bothered me for hours afterward, i wanted to come back and respond but i chose not to and just let it go.

Im with her for shutting that thread. For those of you gettting on her case for not saying something before she closed it, you need to go back and read...

Its great that you share the hobby with them dmack and alot of us were not thrilled how that thread turned. The majority here dont treat people like that and i hope she comes back to post again.

Wow a young reefers forum would be fantastic !! my son aged 8 started his own marine reef aquarium 3 months ago and would be thrilled to have a safe place to discuss his new hobby.
Have to agree with the MOD who closed the tread - I would be heart broken if my son received negative posts as your daughter did..it is tough enough to teach them a hobby that is rewarding as reef keeping without ppl knocking them down.
I have enjoyed this site for many months even tho I have just registered, have learnt a vast amount of info in a very short period of time......so can you imagine what a child could learn!!!

Debi did the right thing. And honestly, moderation on RC is anything but lazy.

You do realize there's a reason I'm not a moderator here, right?

The moderating here is just fine. We have one forum that is over-moderated so I don't go there. If Reef Discussion turns into that, I won't come here either.

Most everybody got what they wanted. The thread was deleted. I don't know how bad it got because I ignored it so I don't have an opinion on it one way or the other.

Maybe some people learned a lesson. Maybe not. It's easy to be skeptical on an internet forum. If it was a joke and people played into it, then they look like fools. How's anybody supposed to know it wasn't a prank?

Nobody should be begging for more moderation. It kills forums.

I think some are a little confused here. The problem was lazy, heavy handed OVER-moderation. I certainly agree that less, but constructive moderation is the key. Closing a thread is not moderating, it's punting and not dealing with a problem.
It's obvious that simply closing a thread with no explanation is easier than warning those individuals that are making an innocent well meaning thread hostile for no other reason than to flex their cyder-muscles.

While that may be the "obvious" reason to you, it doesn't make it correct.

We can argue all day long if you'd like. I can't force you to be right.

I don't understand why she or Dad did not reply? This would have helped clear the confusion IMO. Most people would love to talk with a young Reefer. I think people got more skeptic with no responses and started to get off on things.

I would be against a youth forum. I think it could lead to trouble and more of this...I think parents just need to be involved with them to make a good post with current layout.

Oh, Tell her I said "Sorry" on the original post I said Son. I did not see it was from a girl.

I dont understand why anyone cared at all whether or not it was true. why would you care if someone is making something up to post? Why count spelling mistakes? What difference does it make? If you did catch a 'fake poster'...do you get a prize? pat on the back? pride? what? Get to tell people at work that you really told off that liar on the internet today? eh.
Moderators = good job.
Dad= good job letting your kids get involved, and posting your opinion, AND later acknowledging the moderators.
Youth Forum= good idea. may run into problems. so? a place that kids could show off the tank they have is great.

LOL, I'm sorry my moderating doesn't meet with your approval. Past experience dictates how I decide to do things. I've had a little. I will continue the way I have. "Lazy, heavyhanded overmoderation" Isn't that an oxymoron? You talk a pretty big story for someone who's barely been here for 6 months.

I'm getting lazy and power mad, this thread is close to getting closed also. Do you need more explanation?

The kids are never too young. My 2 year old was with me in the lfs a few weeks ago, and pointed to a yellow tube sponge in the large live rock pool, and top of his voice, "SPUNBOB!" (spongebob, for those of you that don't speak 2 yr.old and who have blessedly never seen the show)

I agree, my niece used to love to go on 'flashlight runs' with me. She was 6 at the time she was here.

While i was going to school i was part-timing at my gf son's daycare. 6 year olds are great. everything is still new to a 6 year old (at the time star wars had just been re-released, and it was "WOW, mr. K, you know about TIE FIGHTERS??" ) and they are old enough to actually do projects and stuff to help them understand. Wish I was 6. goof off...take naps...

To be totally honest, the only reason i got permission to drop the 2500$ i've spent so far on my tank is because my 2 year old goes nuts when we go into the aquarium here in town. He brings me my copy "conscientious marine aquarist" so he can point to the pictures and name them. He hasnt seen finding nemo, mostly because (and by God ill probably get bashed here) i HATE HATE HATE ellen degenres and albert brooks. so there are no Nemo's in our tank, but there are "PATRICKSTARFISH!!"

It's a really cute show for kids tho. My niece calls all my clowns even the Maroon, nemos. I'm surprised she knew it was a clownfish too.

>SIGH< i know. my wife calls it an irrational predjudice, but lord ellen's standup was enough to make me shoot myself in the face, and albert brooks has never been close enough to funny to bite it. one of these days i'll have to buy it, probably my wife will just do it and watch it with him.

I was at the San Antonio Zoo about a month ago and they have a small reef tank. It was so cool how the kids all recognized "dorey" and "nemo". LOL

Debi, you don't need my approval so do as you like.

Who are you calling an oxymoron anyway?
Just so we are clear...I do not mean to call you lazy. I simply meant that just closing a thread without first trying to dissuade the usual suspects seemed to be the easy way out. It also seemed a little heavy-handed. "over-moderation" may have been redundant.
What "big story" do you believe I am trying to talk? How long do I have to be here before I am allowed to state my position?

yeah, and I'm sure when my boy sees it there will all sorts of nemo talk around the house, which i wont discourage....well, i WILL let him know that the actual name is Clownfish. I just won't continue on to say that Nemo's father in an unfunny has-been. At which point, i will be ignored anyway and my clownfish will be nemos.

Albert Brooks is kind of insignificant, most of the people I grew up with barely know of him. Ellen Degenres however...well, its not fair to say much because i havent actually HEARD all that much of her stand up, as thank God after a few seconds i had managed to shove a fork in my ear.
