Their protein skimmers are bigger than mine

Thank you for sharing those pictures--amazing. Do they have one head person who oversees this and others helping? A formidable job!

Imagine putting the chainmail suits on and swimming in there--kinda scary but very cool!

There are a couple of people who take care of everything, one person is in charge of water, one person is in charge of food and diet for the animals, and a couple of people in charge of the equipment.

The water is checked everyday, by one person.

They have 40 certified divers, who clean and maintain the tanks, and they make total of 1000 dives are year at the aquarium.

As for the chain mail suit, they were it but no one has ever been bitten by a shark there...

What is their lighting setup like?
those are coming... no lighting shots, they did not show that... their lighting was not that impressive, because they have no coral, so they do not need a ton of lights...

I was at Shark Reef last year but I didn't know about the behind the scenes tour. I will say it is definetly a sight to see among the many in Vegas. They did have some full grown Sohal Tangs, healthy and HUGE.
If your in Vegas, make it a point to check it out.

Why don't they call it Shark Aquarium rather than Shark Reef? Those synthetic corals are such cheesy. Color me unimpressed. This is just like everything else in Vegas, shallow and uninspired.

Most aquariums have synthetic corals, do you know the impact that aquariums would have on the population of corals if they had corals in aquariums totaling 1.6 million gallons!!!!! This is the reason why they do not have them...

If they took on the project carefully with cultured corals, the coral population impact would be approximately 0% of the world's current coral population. Who says they need 1.6 million gallons to create a magnificent aquarium anyway? I'd consider taking the trip to Vegas just to see a well cared for 500G reef. Large public displays of seemingly "aggressive" fish for spectacle and profit just rub me the wrong way.

Most every day people do not appreciate coral...they like the pretty fish. If an aquarium is public and cared for well, then I am not sure what is wrong with that. That is something that drives this hobby...but to each his own.

great pix- thanx for sharing!
One thing worth pointing out to those that might not know the difference: I believe these aren't "remote sand beds" or "remote deep sand beds". These are sand filters- similar to the filters used on swimming pools. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong!)

Sand filters don't perform natural nitrate reduction. DSB's and remote deep sand beds do.

LOL and little did you know all the public aquariums you visited do the same thing and you just marveled over how spectacular their coral display was

My two cents:
I went to the shark reef on my birthday a few months ago before I had dinner and i have to say that it really was dissapointing. It was extremely short for the price. Maybe the monteray bay aquarium and florida aquariums that i went to in the last year jaded me but for less money I had much more to see at these aquariums. It really should be a free show for how short it is. The tank at the mirage check in is nicer for fish only though there are no sharks. They really shouldnt be having so many sharks in a tank like that. They do so badly in captivity its just not moral for them to have a tank like that. hehe some one should chime in about the PE thread

I find it interesting they use trickle filters, and bio wheels. I don't know how many times on here I have heard GET RID OF THAT!!! It's a NITRATE FARM!!! HAHA if they read reef central they would know this =)

Actually I think the bioballs are only non beneficial in a reef system, since it produces much more detritus. In a FOWLR system, I think they serve their purpose. Why was Reefghoul moved on? I was starting to enjoy his tank thread.
