I removed about 50lbs of sugar-sized sand from our old reef and threw it into an old salt bucket. I put a tight lid on the bucket (so the dog wouldn't investigate), put it aside and forgot about it while I was cleaning out the rest of the tank. The smell when I discovered the bucket a few weeks later and opened it up was unreal. Everything beneath the surface layer was BLACK, the anaerobic bacteria were going to town - what better environment for them than a tightly closed bucket full of compacted sand? The smell of sulpher was overwhelming (and dangerous, from what I've read since), and my husband was gagging for some time after he intervened and unceremoniously disposed of the bucket. He was unimpressed, to say the least.
