So would this OPTI-UPS unit work? It's true sine wave, but it is also line-interactive which apparently isn't good for reef pumps?

I'm surprised too. I would have expected more. Even the Xantrex calculator figured a 25 watt draw would last 8 hours, given the 40 Amp hour battery. You might contact their tech support to see what can be done. Are you sure you have the PowerSource 400 and not the PowerPack 400? The PowerPack 400 has a 20 Amp hour battery.

Yes, it's the PowerSource 400. It started beeping and flashing E01 after about 3 hrs. Well I charged it up to 100% again and hopefully it will last longer next time.

Before I installed the 4000 watt inverter with 4-4d agm batteries I used a Smart UPS 1400 and it has worked fine for the aquariums as stated by APC though this is a higher end unit and does produce a true sine wave.

I have been using the APC Smart-UPS 1000 for years on both of my tanks. I have gotten through numerous outages, some lasting up to an hour. I also recently found www.BuyUpsOnline.com

They give out a discount code for 5% off. When you checkout put cbmnew in the discount code field and you will get the 5% off.

I have the UPS connected to my heaters and pumps....anyone ever hook up an Orbit Light with the metal halides to a battery backups??

Great forum....been looking around alot but this is my first post!!

sure you can hook up the light but it is only going to run for a few minutes before draining the batteries; I would have nothing more connected to the ups than the pump absolute minium to support life.

The directions on my PowerSource 400 specifically say not to connect metal halide lights as they may be damaged.

Yeah I guess it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to put the lights on the ups. Thanks for the input!

Do you have the inverter connected to the batteries and charger to the batteries? Did you ever have an issue running the inverter 24/7? I plan to do the same thing with the true sine wave inverter I just bought.
