Angry Purple firefish tick me off!!!!

This is the second time I bought a purple firefish and both times now they have come with parasites attached. The first one I got had some sort of anchor worm that I had to keep removing and finally the fish died and now I bought another one and this one has some sort of small pod like creature attached to it. If I could catch it I would just throw the darn thing in the garbage but I would have to tare appart my reef. I'll have to wait and see if a cleaner goby or shrimp can do the job first I guess.

Anyone else get parasites on their purple firefish? I hate them!. Never again!

Did you see the fish before you bought it? Did you QT them? Those simple steps would have been great for the long run. I wont buy a fish unless I look at it for at least 15-20 minutes, and then place it in a QT if needed. I just recently lost my purple firefish. I miss that guy.

This is going to result in everyone explaining the importance of QT-ing before introducing a fish to the main display.

Which people don't learn until something bad happens and you have to remove everything in your tank to get it to. I finally learned, after about 5-6 times.

I order all my fish from the other side of the country. I dont get to look at it first. I dont have good pricing locally so i'm forced to shop online. Before anyone starts with the whole QT gig. I will first say that I do not have a QT nor will I ever. I have no room for one although I wish I did. I have a small appartment. Thats why I keep lots of cleaner shrimp and cleaner gobies. I'm not into the whole fish thing anyways. I'm into corals but decided to get a couple small reef fish to spunk up my tank. I HATE PURPLE FIREFISH! The only two times I ever had a parasite problem and it's with the same type of fish both times.

My guy had a few small clear flatworm-looking things riding along on him for a while, but no sign of them now. He's doing fine, although his expression belies the fact.
<------

And yes, you should QT. So should I.

QT will save you much grief.

Get a 20 gallon tank, heater, powerhead and sponge filter.

I got some new ricordias yesterday. I was really tempted to throw them in the display. I resisted the urge and found a aipastia while inspecting today. Got the dremel out and removed most of the rock. I will still QT and inspect.

I've never had aipastia and don't want to try killing it now. Shrooms are bad, aipastia is worse.

At least when a fish is in QT you have a fighting chance of medicating.

"shrooms are bad, aptaisia is worse."

why are shrooms bad? i really like them. i have about 5 different kinds. just curious why you dont like them.

about the QT tank. i dont have one. just curious about them. how long do you leave a fish/coral in them? same temp/salinity/etc. as main tank? any other pointers to setting one up?

thanks

Leave your fish in there for 6 weeks same temp as st, salinity everything the same, only if the fish has ich thats when you lower salinity. Other disease medication. Corals I dont know.

Shrooms are bad when they take over your tank. When injected with Joe's Juice, vinegar, hot water... they come back with more babies.

BTW, I like them when they are not trying to kill my SPS.

WOAH! Sounds like you just introduced isopods into your tank. Don't count on being able to keep any more fish in that tank for the next 6 months if you want to get rid of them.

Watching your new purchase in QT for 4-6 weeks totally sucks, but is worth the peace of mind. Even then there are no guarantees, but the odds of introducing something are extremely reduced.

You have room for a 150g but not a 15g? Even a 10g would be large enough to QT a firefish...

Plus, while 4 - 6 weeks of QT is 'standard, many problems (most?) would get spotted inside the first week.

If you are going to order fish online, unseen, in unknown condtiton, then yes, you definelty NEED a QT.

If you don't want to QT, suck it up and buy locally where you can see the fish before buying, and get only healthy stock.

Which price is higher, paying twice as much for a fish at the LFS, or getting a cheaper fish online, the fish dies, you order another, it dies, and all of a sudden your tank is a disease infested pit. Big savings...

Cheap does not equal better.

I don't think even viewing them in person is a good reason to skip QT. I bought locally, saw no sign of ich but there it was. Lesson learned for me.

this may sound dumb, but are your QT tanks attached to your display tank or are they seperate systems all together?
