simply amazing, I absolutely LOVE boxfish and yours is gorgeous as are all the colors in the tank, did I miss what type of lighting you use?

please post new photos whenever you can, I love your "nondisplay" tank and wish my display tanks looked as nice!

Question: Has curiosity caused you to fragged a small chunk off of the strawberry anemones to see how well (or how long) they fare in your warm water system?

I have not tried that yet. I've been more concerned with learning how to keep the strawberries happy and spreading in ASW. I have heard, though, from someone who has tried... and the strawberries tend to melt down above 70 F.

Nice tank

Why not....it's hot everywhere. It's in the 90's up here today. You just need a chiller. The biggest obstacle to a cold water tank is not heating....it's getting livestock.

Cold water tanks require minimal lighting....mine is just a couple of T5's. The low lighting does make it tough to take photos though.

Steve - your tanks are stunning as usual.

My hubby really wants me to start a coldwater tank, but I'll keep watching yours for ideas for the time being and figure out where to find livestock in Chicago!

Another good reason for us moving to the San Juans. Your cold waters are amazing!

Wow!! Great looking tanks, Steve. I'm just south of you, down on the coast. I have a permit from Or. Dept. of fish & wildlife to collect off the coast here for educational purposes. I have a 50 gallon set up at school and keep tidal plants and animals in it. But not nearly as colorful as yours! The kids love it, though. My school has Oregon Institute of Marine Biology grad students come in and teach units on local marine habitats during the school year. It's great to see more cold water tanks.

Great looking tank.

My Dad had a 180 gallon cold water California tank. He got his animals from a LFS with conections in Baja Mexico. He kept rose anemones, stars, Catalina gobies, snails, garabaldis and local live rock with orange coraline.

His tank never looked as good as yours.

How do you deal with tank sweat (like a soda can on a hot day)? His stand was looking pretty ragged after a year or so.

1 inch thick acrylic for tanks and sump. There is no sweating even on the hottest of summer days.

I missed the 1 inch acrylic part. Nice insulation. It's "cool" to see someone doing something different in a home aquarium.

Basket Starfish

You can see one of these in action in the IMAX Deep Sea video - very cool starfish!
