Cloudy Tank

My tank is becoming really white cloudy. I recently redid the my return pipes so i thought they were doing it but apparently my astrea snails are releasing white junk into the water. It looks like white smoke? Are they spawning? Two of them are doing it and they are in the exact same spot but on different sides of the tank. THey are on the opposite return pipes 1/2 in and out of water.

Also, should i do a waterchange or is this no big deal?

Thanks.

How old is the tank and how big is it? If your tank is cloudy, I would do about a 30% water change with RO/DI water and run some fresh carbon. If you notice your water is clearing up keep doing this. I am assuming the tank is new.

The tank is a 20 gallons, 10 gallon sump. It is barely over 1 year old. The cloudiness just started 20 min ago. I can physically see the snails releasing this stuff.

I knocked one of the snails off the wall, he release some more white stuff when he got to the sand, then he went on his way. The tank is now starting to clear up on its own!?!?!

What kind of fish do you have in there? I know when I had Clarkii clowns they would sturr the sandbed up and the tank would go real cloudy.

I doubt it has anything to do with the snails. My snails do that from time to time and I usually assume they are just emmiting waste.

go to petsmart and get some carbon and the filter bag and put it in your overflow. it will clear tank up in couple of hours. make sure you rinse your carbon in water before putting in tank.

your snails are "in the mood".. there's an example of it on this page

http://www.reefcorner.com/SpecimenSh...trea_snail.htm

if your temp bumped up a couple deg recently they prolly thought it was spring again. if you have a good skimmer it should get the stuff out... maybe do a water change if it doesn't go fast enough.. I guess you can try carbon also.. but the particles might be too large for carbon to do much good..
