I have had a sally for two years with no problems and a couple of emarlds too. Actually about a year and a half ago I had a blenny that was found with his lower half missing. Don't know if he was caught or they got him after he died. I won't get a fish that sits on the rocks anymore.

This is why sometimes I hate forums. You see many posts here with real world experiences and no negatives on sally's. One person makes a statement like this with no real world experience. All of a sudden they are fish killers and should be banned to sumps. I have had a large one for a year now with small fish. No problems at all. I got it from someone who had it a year before me with no problems.

One post in here with some zoas missing after a friend's crab was spotted nearby. Guilty by association?

Well the guy I bought it from has alot of experience and I trust his opinions and he said. "Might go after a snail or two. But yeah, reef safe". That's why I got him.

I have real world experience, and I didn't trust it after it started lunging at my fish. Is that experience negative enough?

was the lunging as a way to protect its domain? Do you not see the same action from other fish sometimes? Did you actually see it hunt down, tackle, and consume a live fish?

I have a Sally that has never taken a fish. It "lunges" at them often. Matter of fact it lunges at my Marine Betta every time it goes by. Not a chance it's going to eat it though. My Emerald crabs OTOH have been spotted on many a coral that did not make it. Does that mean the Emerald ate them? Nope. Does that mean they had something in common? Yes.

Take a look at the size of their claws compared to their overall size. They are not even built to be fish killers. Have you ever gone blue crab fishing? Compare the claw size there. Salley's are opportunist feeders like most crabs. If a fish is dying or would die they do there job.... cleanup. Otherwise they go along life eating algae and some frozen food they can chase down.

If I see a fish or crab defend their territory I am not going to scream out fish killer.

If that kind of behavior is ok with you, fine, but I don't trust them. I had a LMB that I'm pretty sure jumped out of the tank because of it, then I got a mandarin and didn't want to take any more chances. I like my tanks peaceful and that crab became really aggressive. No thanks.

coming from someone with the name "hippiesmell" I guess any aggression would not be in your choice. I assume you never raised African cichlids...

Will some fish and crabs defend some territory? Sure its in the nature of all living things. IMO will a sally or blue leg crab hunt down and kill a fish... nope. That is because I own both and watch both.

To each their own.

My point is .. have you ever seen a Sally hunt down and murder a perfectly healthy fish first hand?

BTW..

My mantis was suppose to suppose eat the damsels in the tank with it months ago.

My flame angel was suppose to eat my corals months ago...

Neither has happened. Creatures just like us humans take the path of least resistance. As long as I feed well and take care of my pets, I have no problems.

No, it's not in the nature of all living things, that's why I don't like them.

No, I haven't. Have you ever seen your heart beating? My point is that I don't trust them because of what I've seen.

Well, best of luck to you. What happens to your philosophy when one of those things does happen? What happens when you don't feed for a while, either because you're on vacation, or because you want to reduce nutrients, or any other number of reasons? My sally was fine until I had to cut back on feeding. So, for a lot of people, sally's are not a good choice IME.

another happy camper here, love them and find them very interesting creatures

cwilson,

you will be fine with them as long as you don't OVERSTOCK, and have to cut back on feeding, and starve them, then you will be fine, anyway any creature you starve will be force to find food out of desperation, even humans turn to Cannibalism in serious cases

good luck,

sam
