UV sterilizer

When using a UV sterilizer, do I have to worry about it affecting my nitrogen cycle bacterias OR it killing that's that are beneficial to my tank?

Keep in mind that anything that passes theough the UV will get zapped. Including pods, micro-plankton, etc... Also, that the UV tube will / can add additional heat to the system.

IMO, unless your treating for a specific bacterial infestation I'd rather spend the money on a quality skimmer or other piece of equipment. Or even livestock.

ive had good luck with my uv filter. it hasnt killed pods and barely any extra heat, my water is clearer than its ever been, and my new fish looks as happy as can be

UVs are not a cure for ich. The only sure way (cure) it to set up a treatment tank and treat the fish outside the main system. This is a very complex topic.

I dont care too much about my pods, my 6 line decimated them.

then your flow through it isn't set right and it isn't doing much good.

it shouldn't harm the nitrogen cycle though. most of that bacteria stays on the rocks and sand rather then free floating

I used it to help me with my ich a long while back. It wasn't the only thing I did, but I thought it helped. Leave it on for a month to make sure you catch the "swimming cycle" of it. It's not a cure by itself, but I think they help IMO
