Didnt you scrub your LR off before you put it into your tank?
If not i would take it out,& get that "die off" off there. It will only make your tank take longer to complete the inital cycle.

I never have scrubbed the live rock before...when I had my last tank years ago, but then again, I never got any that had so much "stuff" growing on it. If that needs to be done, I will take it out and do so. Is the kelp and anenome good or bad? |

That is not kelp it is hamilda(spelling) needs proper calicum to thrive it will turn white if it starts to dye and its not a bad thing It is commonly sold Im pretty sure that is cariban rock. The coral, algea, and anenmone are cariban and none are bad. I would leave the rock to do its thing. You got lucky with the coral I will get species name in a min. they are all over the keys and the only way to legaly get them is if they grow on aquacultured rock.

If it were me I would test ammonia daily and when I saw it reach 1.0 I would do a 10-15% water change. This will make you cycle a little longer however you will have a better chance at saving the life on your rockwork. It is called soft cycling. Yup I would do whatever I could to save the life you have.

Make sure you use ro-di or distilled water. Do not use tap water this will add to any potential algae outbreak you might experience. Also make sure the salt is mixed in the water prior to adding it to your tank and that you make the Sg as close to the same value as your tank water. Also use a heater to make the change water as close to the temp of your tank as possible. Don't know if you knew any of that but I though I would throw it out there anyway. If you did know already sorry for posting the obvious.

I would personally try to keep the SG closer to NSW.

I would not worry about feeding it now the goal is to keep the ammonia below 1.0 Maybe someone else can chime in here on whether they think it will make it through a soft cycle or not.

I see a big A$$ bristle worm i think in the 3rd pic.
IMHO,i doubt that anything will live through your cycle, because of all the die off on that liverock.

I does look very "worm" like....it is probably 6" long, but I believe it is dead. I am along w/ u on everything will probably die during the cycle, but I am crossing my fingers anyway. |
