First, make sure the air hole at the top of your standpipe is clear. If it has salt deposits, you can dissolve them by pouring microwave-warmed RO/DI water on it.

if you have a protein skimmer the sock is not necessary so it can be removed

I'm curious...why do you say that? I have both a sock and a protein skimmer and get plenty of crud in both.

Socks, although good, can be a nitrate factory if not removed and cleaned every few days. If your skimmer is powerful enough then using both is not that important, and its one more thing to have to clean. I only use one after a water change, or after I blow the dirt off of my LR.

What type of return pump are you running? I have the same overflow and I had to move to a bit smaller pump to stop mine from making so much noise, I think my eheim 1260 is pretty much maxing mine out although I have not modified it in any way.

then you need to put a ball valve on that line so you can bring down the flow until it makes no sound

or can you crank down the pump.

You do not need alot of flow through the filter--in fact if you slow it right down you give the water more of a chance to be filtered

I had a similar problem. I put a small hole near the bottom of the line (above the water line) and it fixed it.
The problem is that putting the output under water creates a siphon effect, but having it above the water line makes it loud as well. a small hole near the bottom allows air to escape.
