Tunze Osmolator and Kalk for TopOff

Hello all,

Anybody here have a Tunze Osmolator and use it to top off Kalk? I'm just wondering how long the pump that's included with the Osmolator will last if dosing Kalk... I've heard that Kalk can decrease pump life, or will regular cleanings with vinegar be enough to keep the pump going for awhiles?

Thanks for any input!

The only problem I had with using the osmolator with kalk, is in the summer you tank evaporation increases, thus the osmo will dose a lot more kalk saturated water.

I would use a kalk reactor, along with your osomolater is a great set up

That's how I use the Osmolator also. This way it just feeds RO/DI water into the reactor,so you won't have to worry about any wear on the pump.HTH

Anyone use the Osmolator with the Calcium kit Tunze sells? Just wondering how that works. Would be the same result in the summer with a higher evap rate though, I guess?

i used it before... its okay, i'd go with the other suggestion and get a kalk reactor. I sold the tunze ca dispenser and got an aqua medic kalk stirrer.

I use an osmolator to top off kalk. I am pleased with the results but have not tried alternative methods. If you've got the osmolator give it a go. You can always 'upgrade' to a stirrer etc if you're not pleased with it.

A simple topoff container with kalk mixed in is a better way to go than a "reactor" or stirrer.

That's interesting. My evaporation is a lot lower in the Summer months. My 44G topoff lasts ~ 3 weeks in the Summer, barely 2 weeks in the Winter.

I've got the same experience as Yinger with the Tunze Dispenser. It works. It's a very simple setup, but it's hard to tell if you are getting a concentrated mix of kalk. As the demands of my tank have grown, I'm finding myself dosing more & more Ca and Alk supplements.

I have been dosing Kalk topoff with the Osmolater for many months without issue. You can run vinager thru it now and then to keep it clean (but I never have). In any event, as was posted the replacement pump is only like $20.
