edr42 - I just came back from snorkelling in Hawaii and my pictures cannot compare to yours, Your underwater photography skills are amazing. I was using an Olympus SW790, 7.1 megapixels, good only for snorkelling as it has a maximum depth rating of 10 feet. Still, your framing of shots makes for very pleasurable viewing. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful photos. I am in FL. now and plan to retire in OZ while I am still young enough to dive the GBR. Do they have nets up to keep the white sharks out of the areas where there are divers in the water?

Those would have to be some lonnggggg nets.

There are nets on some of the beaches but no, the reef itself is one large wild area.

When I dived the GBR some years ago, I was told the great whites (and other larger sharks) tend to stick to open water and don't come into the reef so much. They follow their prey which tend to be open water too. The only sharks I got to see were wee little reef sharks, who would take off like a shot when they saw us, so I couldn't even get decent photos because they were gone so fast.

also im pretty sure the great whites prefer colder water, its the tiger sharks u have to look out for.

Unfortunately there are still shark nets out on many beaches, which is a horrible and ridiculous practice.
At the end of the day, if you don't want to run the incredibly minute chance of being nipped by a shark (no, sharks do not actually eat people) simply don't get in the water. If you are fortunate enough to encounter a large shark in the water, watch it and be grateful to have seen a magnificent animal before it is wiped out for good.

Actually, i highly recommend that anyone who can goes and sees "Sharkwater". Its basically a summary of everything about sharks that i've held dear since i was about 5. I guarantee you it will change your perspective, even if you don't like the movie.
After all, in the end we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught.

Thanks for all the comments guys, and vbsaltydog i recon retiring on the reef is a wise idea, you've never too old to dive.

Thanks for the film recommendation. I will check it out. As for the retirement, I am only 35 now and am talking about retiring on the reef at 45, not 65 so I should still be in good shape for diving. Not that a 65 y/o can't dive if they wanted to.

well said on the sharks, they have always been my favorite animal on this planet. i was fortunate to have seen a few during my dives in the Philippines.
