Unhappy Cannister filter in reef what media?

Hi i am currently running a canister filter ( Eheim 2028 Pro II ) in my reef tank with loads of live rock and an instant ocean skimm 800. The canister has 3 chambers and a sponge but i belive there is disadvantages with running cannister filters in the reef and would like the opinion of everyone as to what media to use or non and just use it for circulation and if thats the case how will i collect small dirt particles. The tank is only 170 litres so i am over skimming it.

Many thanks Dave.

you can run carbon or phosphate remover if you are having a nutrient problem ,I personally use no mechanical filtration just a good skimmer with ozone. the ozone made the water much clearer .

I'm running two eheim canisters in my tank. The media I use is for the first one: floss, biomedia, chemipure elite and purigen. The second one I run regular chemipure, purigen and phosban.

On the canister with filter floss, I try to clean out the floss every month or so.

I have a Remora Pro skimmer.

Don't listen to me though, my nitrates are at 20 ppm and I can't seem to get them down even with 15% water changes every week.

I think I'm overfeeding (one frozen cube a day), but those darn anthias keep begging for food everytime I walk by.

I would let your fish get used to not eating every day. I feed mine once in the morning and they always come to the top when I put my hand near the top but none of them died yet so id just get them used to beibg fed once a day.

i have a fluval and a skimmer- i keep live rock rubble in the fluval along with carbon bags that i change out about once a month. in terms of getting nitrates down- ya know what worked really well for me? a crocea clam- noticeable difference! if you have the right lighting that is

Is there any evidence that crocea clams reduce nitrates? I have two and my nitrates are still high (higher than before I got them - not that they are the problem).

I am assuming you are advocating feeding your fish once a day==read the first sentence again

I think that depends on the fish you have eg tangs are grazers they need to be feed a few times a day even if it is nori or an algae sticky on the side of the tank.
I believe anthias require multiple feeds a day??

they do but very little--by the time a corcea matures 95 per cent of its energy is supplied by its algae in its mantle.

a better source of nitrate reduction would be running a refugium with cheato macroalgae

We run a marineland C360 with ROWAPhos and carbon and ceramic bio disks and bioballs in it we also run a few Koralia powerheads in our tank.

I use a canister just to polish the water.
I use the Fluval fx5. I will probably just set it to come on for a few hours a night soon but for now I just plug it in when I want too.
It does a great job of cleaning up the water. I/m running carbon, a phosphate media, and a polishing filter along with the normal sponge filters and particle filters. I would suggest cleaning it up every 10 days or so if you use it on a regular basis.

I run an Eheim 2013 in both of my reefs. All I use in there is filter floss (changed once a month), Chemipur Elite and Rowaphos. I took everything else out of my Eheims.

alot of reefers gut the cannisters completely and only run carbon in them.
A mixture of phosban and carbon would not be effective in a cannister filter. The phosban need to heave a little to be in contact with the water column.
