ID Please
I found these over the weekend.
I dunno what kind of worms these are but I've got about 5 or 6. I'd like to know if they're good or bad. I have no idea what this is. It looks like a snail without a shell but I didn't see an empty shell anywhere. Last edited by VahanM; 07/14/2008 at 09:47 AM. |

Hi VahanM,
You're just about going to have to get a photo of the head of the worm, and probably a view looking down on its back to have much chance of getting it positively identified. As for the snail thing, I'm pretty good with snails, but I can't make out any of the characteristics that might let me ID it in your pic: I don't see any spiral that would be in the spire if a snail detached from its shell, I can't tell for sure what part is the foot, I can't tell if that's a limpet-type shell on its back(?) or just something in the photo that looks like it, etc. If you can catch it and take photos from several angles in a dish, that's the best way to get something like that identified. Cheers, Don |

Was afraid of that...problem is this worm is underneath one of my base rocks and I discovered it while redoing my rockscape. It's very hard to get to it now as I have to take everything out again.
I just gotta hope it comes out for me to grab it. Thanks guys. |

Yep, keep your eyes open. I pulled four out of my system so far, but haven't seen any since. That doesn't mean I don't have them. They look bright orange when you hit them with a flashlight at night, and retract faster than a peanut worm.
Their legs are quite different from bristles on bristleworms. |

...and "snail food," too! Adult Conus vexillum in Samoa eat either that worm or one that looks a lot like it (iridescent red in the sunlight) almost exclusively. The ones I'm talking about are eunicids, I guess yours are too, Marc?
