I renamed them Loud as *&^$ pumps. They do quiet down after a week or so, but I replaced the one I had, tried a second one to see if it was just a one time thing, and now have replaced that one too. Not bad for the price, but not quiet IMO.

The Ocean Runner 6500 is a much better choice, it runs cooler, is quieter and does not have trouble restarting like QO pumps do. I got rid of all my QO pumps and now own 4 OR pumps.

I just set up a new 150 gallon tank and had, that's right had, a quiet one 4000 running the secondary line to the protein skimmer. When we turned it on it was brand new. It was loud and obnoxious. It had a problem with the impeller. We ordered a part and tried to put up with the noise until it came. However, within 10 days it just quit working altogether. Terrible product.

The 6500 is 1625 GPH and will handle head much better than the QO 9000.

Check with www.customaquatic.com another RC sponsor, it may be cheaper and they offer RC member discounts on regular priced stuff.

Quiet One vs Ocean Runner.
My first return pump was an Ocean Runner 3500. It was noisy, hard to start, and the impeller kept breaking. Overall, my opinion is that this pump is very poorly designed and a really pain.
I replaced the Ocean Runner with a Quiet One 2200. I have to say that I have had no problems with it. It is both more reliable and much quieter than the Ocean Runner. Maybe I'm the exception, but this has been my experience. |

Im using an Ocean Runner on my skimmer and it is dead silent. No complaints. 4 months nonstop and not a lick of trouble
Just hope the 6500 has good head pressure.

Well I got the Ocean Runner installed and I give it a
Super quiet, did not have as much head pressure as I wanted but more than what I had. Its perfect with out the chiller so I may get a small pump for the chiller and plumb some other things off of that to rid my self of some other pumps I am using in the sump. None the less I am happy and the pump is the quietest water pump I have ever heard.

I might have to try an ocean runner myself. I like dead silent. The Eheims are perfect they just don't offer enough flow for everything I need.
Thanks.

2 QO 3000's here, not a single complaint as far as heat and noise is concerned.
Maybe it's just the larger models that have problems? I honestly cannot see how a pump could be any quiter. I am running submerged though..
