I would say yes, but a better idea would be to ask the MFG. I haven't seen many tanks with tempered sides, but they are made. One things for sure. You will find out pretty quick when you start drilling.

I agree with Entropy and checking with the maker. Some tanks are okay, some just to a certain size and others not at all. Cant really tell unless you know who made it or are able to have someone determine if its tempered glass.

Well there is destructive testing. You basically start drilling and hope for the best.

There is a way to test for it that apparently works, but I have only read about it. You take a pair or polarized sun glasses and a lap top. Put the lap top in the tank with the sceen set to all white (change background color or just open notepad maximized) and then look at the screen through the panel in question. If you see any colors or patterns the glass is tempered (stressed), if not the glass is ok to drill.

Test at your own risk.

Love that comment

Really though there is a test that can be done looking at the tank through some lens or something. Maybe a local glass shop could look at it and tell you if it is or isn't??

I know some glass shops can tell if it is. They have some special filters that they put on the glass and tell. But hey my daddy wasnt no glass maker so Im not sure how they do it.

take a pair of polarized glasses put them on. turn your head to the left. or right 90 degrees . if you see patterns its tempered. if you want to be sure if this works look at your car windshield

Your best bet is to contact the manufacturer of the tank. My 55 reads tempered on the bottom and everyone said it was ok to drill the sides. However something told me to call the manufacture and it turned out that every panel was tempered.

Car windshield is not tempered, only the side windows. Windshield is laminated.

Look for a sticker with a symbol on it. I know perfecto uses a sticker that shows the build date and a pic of an anchor.
