Painting back of Aquarium. What kind of paint?

I want to paint the back of my new 90 gal tank black. I have used standard spray paint in the past. Is there a better paint out there that is better than spray paint? Thanks

I used 3 coats of krylon fusion and it worked well. not sure anything is *better* other than durability and as long as nothing nicks the back, I'm happy with the $7 purchase

Same I just used the Krylon Fusion and it worked great.

Others I know have used exterior latex etc as well with good results.

I did mine with the Rustoleum black and put it on with a disposable small foam roller. It covers it faster and does not chip off as easy.

I have also done a few tanks with the spray method but prefer the roll on.

Both methods will work just fine but remember to tape off anything you dont want painted or over spray on

Rustoleum black all the way. I've painted dozens of tanks with excellent results. Use a foam brush or roller and just glob it on really thick. Only takes 1 coat for impatient people like me

I wouldn't paint it, a recent study has shown it will cut your light dramatically. If anything, tape up the paper background.

Learned that at MACNA this past weekend - thank you James Fatherree.

Paper or paint wouldn't they absorb light the same. I`m curious on how it cuts down on lighting unless reflection plays a part somehow....

It has to do with having an air space between the glass and paper. If you wet the glass and then put the paper on it, it has the same effect as paint.

Help me out here hans1976. It may be so obvious that I totally missed it but...how does the back of the aquarium painted black affect the clams in the picture below?

Im also curious about this study. Is it written somewhere? also does black reflect light more than blue. Im a little undecided if I should do blue or black. What do you think?

I'm also curious about this "study." Does it affect PAR values through the tank or something? Doesn't really make sense to me, especially in a drastic manner (not saying your wrong, would just love to hear more about it).

Taken from the article:

- If you have a wall of live rock from bottom to top along the back of your tank, then don't worry about the background too much.

- Always keep your glass clean to promote better reflection regardless of backgrounds.
(Coraline Growth, coral growth?)

Great Read. SO it is pretty much for those corals that have some sort of reflection contact with the back glass, I think it is very limmited in most tanks. Good to know though. Next time I am going to place corals in a manner that they face the back of the tank instead of the front of the tank I will consider not painting the back.

They didn't test a clear background though?
