Acro Eating Red Bugs (My Eradication Thread...)

Well Justin came over yesterday and shot some pics with his nice camera, while we were looking at the pictures after the shoot, he thought he saw some red bugs on the pictures.
He ran to the tank to confirm what he thought he saw in the pictures, and sure enough...

They are all over several corals...
So here goes my eradication of them, follow along

First I needed Interceptor, Emailed Rob up at UWP.
He said he was closed for the day but would see what he could do tomorrow.
I'm kinda impatient so I called my Vets office I use for my cats and explained the situation.
They said they had never heard of this and didn't really deal with corals or any kind of fish..
But said I needed some kind of documentation to prove that's what I needed.

So I printed up the thread from reefs.............. and took it over to them.
The doctor approved it after a little persuasion and gave me a pill of Interceptor.

I took the pill home and ground it up, here you see the prescription bag and after I ground it up.

Next I needed to split it up. Since I don't have access to a scale that goes to .000's of a gram, I decided to split it up by volume.
I miss calculated how many parts I would need to split it up into. I thought I needed 10 parts (Doses) for my 50G tank, When I really needed 8. Well I don't need all 8 but needed to split the pill into 8 parts.

Funny thing was I only had this for a mirror. (I don't make it a habit to cut lines of powder often)

So then my wife happened to have these tiny containers.

Then I mixed it with water..

Holding off on the dosing till tomorrow when I can watch the tank during the first run.

Here we go!

Some good helpfull info from another reefer, that should be noted and passed along:

Quote:

1. Here is a link to all the pictures you need

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/s...ghlight=redbugs

2. Melev has a great step by step acticle, illustrating a QT time setup.

http://www.melevsreef.com/redbugs.html

3. The method was pionered by Dustin of ORA? I believe this is the original thread.

http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=43945

4. One large dog tablet will treat 350 gallons.

5. The cat or dog Interceptor is the same stuff.

6. Having treated my tank more than once for these things. I have this to add:

A. Treat once a week for a minimum of 3 weeks, NO EXCEPTIONS. Even if they don't "see" anymore. They WILL comeback if they don't.

B. You can't overdose with this, and more is better.

C. I don't do the WC afterwards anymore. I run Carbon and turn back on the skimmer. If a WC is desired, I would wait a minimum of 24hrs to ensure full exposure and elimination. I have found no effects of doing such.

D. After the 3 weeks, the pod/bug population will be low. There will be increased algae and possible browning after because of the lack of a pod population.

E. Have you noticed the pills are foil sealed? I keep thinking that oxidation exposure can reduce the shelf life and efectiveness of the pill. To grind it up weeks prior to using it may increase this effect. I break off quarter chunks as needed.

hahah...
I know I'm a shame to the reefers!!

Update, bugs are scampering around all over the corals like they are on fire.
Nothing else seems affected so far.

hahah.
Ok update.

Red bugs are no where to be seen.
I did find my new Acro from AL had an Acro crab living in it!!!
He was stresed out from the chemicals, so he got moved to the QT tank.
I hope he will survive, he's pretty cool!

Nothing looks amiss in the tank, just missing red bugs.
Tomorrow I will run Carbon and do a water change.
Wait 7 days then repeat then wait 7 more days then repeat again. and even perhaps a 4th just to be sure.
