i have a 34g all the way up on the third floor of my house so i'd say around 60g maybe even 80g would be ok.

To be as safe as possible, make sure you place the tank up against a load-bearing wall and make sure the tank stand is spread over as many floor joists as possible. The stand should run perpendicular to the floor joists, not parallel.

I have a 75 gallon w/ 30 gallon sump and 15 gallon top off on the third floor of my appt. I built the stand extra long in order to spread the load over more floor joists... The tank is up against a load-bearing wall, perpendicular to the floor joists.

well you can pay a structural engineer to take a look and see if it's safe. for the peace of mind i guess it's worth it.
