Hitchhiker id please - anemone?

What is this? My zoa's don't seem to like it much. There are two on this rock that I got from a local reefer.

A couple of applications of Joes Juice will kill them... hopefully before they pop up everywhere. Don't feed 'em!

I thought Majano was brown?? I removed six of those this morning. These two seem to be OK and so far have not spread or caused problems. Should I whack them too or just keep an eye on them?

Never seen a tulip with that many fingers either...Looks like a small rock anemone to me. If so, I had one many moons ago, never caused any issues. But anemones are usually a pain if you are putting a lot of corals in your system as they tend to roam, stinging everything along the way.

I'm not going to remove it. At least not yet as I kinda like it. Anyway, I searched majano and there was a pic of it. Then some on here say it's not majano some say it's a tulip, some say it's neither. Maybe if I bump this thread a few more times someone will know for sure?

When in doubt, throw it out. A phrase to remember in a SW tank.

By the time you figure it out, you can be overrun by these nasty buggers.

Act now w Joe's Juice and show no mercy when you see more (and I bet you will).

Yeah, I don't think that's a very good philosophy as well. There isn't much out there that's going to cause irreversible destruction of your tank if you take a few weeks to observe it and do some research. There are far more unidentified creatures in our tank that are beneficial than those that are problematic.

Haha Just kidding. You know two things so far....it spreads quickly (you removed 6 this morning) and it bothers other corals (Your zoas dont like it). Do whatever you want...but based on the two things you know you can be pretty sure that it is an invasive species.

If you like it who cares what everyone else says...pretty soon you may have a whole take full of them and you could love it. Keep on rocking that mojano.

I must not be explaining my situation well. I removed about six little brown things that turned out to be majano. They looked nothing like this creature (see pic in first post) of which I have two. They are not spreading or moving at all. I want to be absolutely sure of what they are before making a decision on what to do.

So far I have gotten responses saying they are majano, mini carpet, tulip anemone and Heteractis malu (which is a beautiful anemone).

it is NOT H. malu (it doesn't even remotely look like one, no rings on tentacles, wrong color, etc)

google image search "tulip anemone" every single picture is an exact match to yours, and some link to bob fenners site for his ID. they aren't as bad as aiptasia, but they will spread

FWIW: Every majano I've ever seen has those reddish, pink tips! The brown ones are the Aptesias.

Hello there WWM Crew,

We recently purchased a beautiful anemone from a large chain pet store and unsurprisingly, the staff there had no knowledge of the animal we wished to purchase. It was just far too beautiful to pass on. That being said, I will give a brief description and then also attach a photo for your review. It has a bright reddish orange foot and a very bright green body. The tentacles are also green and tipped in light pink and form a spiral shape when not being moved by the current. The body is shaped like a plate with most of the tentacles growing from the edges with only 8 or so tentacles places just around its mouth. I have spent several hours scouring the Internet in attempts to identify it so we can understand it's wants and needs but have not even been able to find a photo of one with a similar body style!

Is very likely a Heteractis malu... on the basis of the pedicle color, tentacular structure... see here:

That is not a Heteractis malu. They are majano's. I have some in my 29G and if you keep them in check they are ok. They can spread fast if you do not watch them.

This is what I removed. It's definately brown and no pink tips. I googled majano and this was the first thing that popped up. Seems to be some serious disconnect as to what majano really is.
