Return Nozzle Question
Hi Everyone,
I have a 75G reef ready marineland corner flo system. My question is this: The Return nozzle is a loc-line and is a Y-split and the end of the nozzles has a fitting the is in the form of a triangle and the water exits out from small slits in the nozzles. It seems that the flow is slowed down greatly by first the Y-Split and then the small slits. Should I remove the small slit pieces to increase the flow or would you remove the Y slit end fittings and just have one nozzle with no Y slits return the water? Looking for more Flow from the return, I am running a Quiet One 3000 that is working really well. Thanks in advance. John |

It is slowed because you have two outlets in place of one. Remove the Y if you want more Direct flow, the 'slits' are not hurting you.

I wouldn't rely on your return pump for circulation in the tank. I would get some powerheads in there to move the water.

I'm not too concerned with circulation but that I am effectively cycling through my water system as many times per hour as I possibly can.
Thoughts? |

You are confusing GPH or flow with velocity and they are two different things. What you have gives you the maximum amount of surface area on the return so the greatest flow. If you were to cut back to a single return by removing the wye and second nozzle its very possible you would cut the flow down but increase the velocity due to less surface area at the nozzle or exit.
Its kind of like comparing a MaxiJet 1200 powerhead to a Seio or Koralia type pump. The MJ1200 seems like it outpumps the others because it is a more directed blast of water compared to the wide dispersed flow from the Seio and Koralia but in truth they are pumping up to 4 times more flow just less velocity. |
