Using a MaxiJet 600 Externally

I have a Maxi Jet 600 in my get my feet wet 10 tank. Plenty of flow but it heats the water to 82 - 83 deg. Can I run this pump externally with hose and fittings to keep the temp. down a bit, or will it still heat the water just as much? Thanks.

Your maxi-jet needs to be submerged.

Could you please tell me why? For cooling? If not, it has a nipple to attached a hose.

They are submersable only pumps. What heats your water is what keeps them from burning up.

After finding a Maxi-Jet 600 box in my closet, it shows a external application.

I was wrong.

In addition to that, the pumps are not designed to free spin. They designed to have that little bit of back water pressure. If you tried do do it I dont think the pump would last 1 day.

I figured that but when the mfg. advertises that they can run dry without over heating, how can they run dry while being submersed. Upside down mabey. This is what I need. Will an external pump heat the water in your experience? Thanks.

An external pump shouldn't heat the water.
I don't have much experince with dealing with heat issues in smaller tanks.
Maybe a new thread asking about nano tank powerheads and heat issues.

Good thinking. I'll post it now. I should have thought of reading one of the four boxes that were pretty much sitting in front of my face. I was not running the powerhead because of the heat. Then when I realized that my 2 fish need it & enjoy it, plus the ph drop I'm dealing with seems to be tied to co2, I now know that I need to pump in more clean oxygen, and break the water table.
Thanks again.

From tech support at Marineland

mmedeiros2, If you are using the pump externally you will need a 3/4" i.d. hose to connect to the pump's inlet and a 1/2" i.d. hose to connectto the pump's outlet. Since the pump is not self-priming you will need to get the siphon started but the pump will keep the flow going once connected.

they are also very weak pumps. They can't lift water more than about 30" vertical. The pump would have to be sitting right next to the tank, not on the floor or under the stand.

Maxijets are water cooled, not air cooled. Most of the heat will still enter the water if it is used externally. There is no fan or heatsink on it to cool it out of the water. My GEO Kalk reactor uses one mounted externally.

Thanks guys. I will be mounting the pump high on the glass of the tank side toward the back. I will plum it with 3/8" PVC. I'm just looking for a small 3/8" 90 deg. piece of PVC or acrilic for the outlet to attach to the adjustable direction piece.
The main reason for doing this is because in the summer when the temp. in the room gets near 80 deg., the pump would raise the temp. near 84 deg. and my damsel would start panting. Normally (winter time) it keeps the temp. at 81 deg.
I do not beleive that if it is mounted externally that it would heat the water as much. The water flowing past one end of the pump a the impellar, should be nothing like the pump sitting in water constantly. Marineland claims the pump can run dry without overheating. I wouldn't try it though. I let you guys know of the temp. difference when I get it running. Hopfully soon.
