Pulp Fishin's 60g Pentagon build
Hello Reefers and first off thank you for your interest in my thread.
I've seen many great build threads and learned all that I could from them. So finally I'm sitting down to make my own. First off the story. Last summer I had my mega-flow wet/dry filter for my 135gFOWRL tank spring a leak. Lucky I was home and had only small live stock at the time. So I moved them to a 23g30x12x12) hospital-tank and started my work on breaking down my 135(72x18x24) to my 60g(30bx10sx18h) pentagon corner tank I had bought used for $100 w/ stand on kijiji.ca First I had to have glass cut at a local glass shop for my sump & locate some marine safe silicone. Then to converting my first tank (a 20gtall 24x12x18) into my sump. Glass was $21, tank was $25used & silicone about $7. All prices in Cad!

Rock/Sand & water:
I had about 110 mixed Indo/Tonga/Figi/Vanuatu and 1/3rd of the sand from my 135 go into the tank. It took a few days of playing with the rock to find something sturdy & looked good to me. This tank never had the stared cyano break out probably since the rock/sand & water all came from my 135 before I completely drained it and broke it down(I had to in order to get the wet/dry out of the stand, i hated the wet/dry and happy its gone and i got credit for it) at this point the hood is a $9 sheet of cut eggcrate and the light is a spare snap on! Next was the initial livestock & my crabless CUC

I also added a DIY refugium made from a spare red sea salt bucket. I found this worked great because I cut the hole with a dremmel. Also since its square shaped all I had to do to make a total seal was add a quality bulkhead and some spare parts I have arround. As you can see its fed by my phosban reactor and water flows out the bulkhead into the return past where the skimmer is(skimmer not in this pic).

After this I kept my eye on some used aquarium equipment in my area. I passed up a few quality deals, optimistic that a great deal was around the corner.
I hated the egg-crate & snap on light even as a temporary thing so I made a DIY hood<---total cost $24. I almost had to make the hood myself since this shape/size auarium is not commen. Fast forward 6 months and I have added a 36" T5 Retro Fit Kit to my hood, and I found a deal that was too gooo to refuse! Most important of the deal was I got 100lbs of live rock, a Euro-Reef skimmer & a 20gal sump to get my 135 back in working order, but a 250W metal halide Retro Fit and some corals and a handfull of livestock.

Looks like a nice start... I'm definitely a fan of the tote fuge, and all the DIY.
Nice to finally put a tank to the name. Shake n' Bake? |

For flow I did use 2xKoralia 3's that I had from my 135fowlr but I swapped one of them out for a Tunze 6025.
The pump I also got a great deal for slightly used. HABS#1 member tried to go from canister filter to sump but his family hated the noise so they wanted the canister back. HABS#1 happens to work in the same building as me so I got the Mag 7 w/ the return hose/valve & return after only a week or two of use. This works to apx 33.5x turn over with head loss or 36.8x not including whats lost in the return. Now, the fish! In this tank I now only keep small fish. In the top pics you can see a small blond naso tang which I removed just by putting food in a sterile 2gal pickle jar & waiting till it went for the bait(I also caught both skunk cleaner shrimp & my coral beauty in the jar at the same time but they went right back in). My stock list, since you can see most the fish in the above pics I won't bother to show a pic for each fish. 1 Coral Beauty 1 Blue Chromis 3 Ocellaris Clownfish 1 Green Mandarin 2 Yellow Watchman Goby's & a Blue Stripe Pipefish I have 2 Yellow Watchmen Gobys I have a crabless CUC of apx 35-40 assorted snails & 2 cucumbers. For inverts I have 2 Skunk Cleaner Shrimp, 2 Blood Cleaner Shrimp, 2 Harlequin Shrimp & 6 Sexy Shrimp! My female Mandarin & blue stripe pipefish. Both eat frozen bryne & mysis like champs. Harlequins Sexy Shrimp-they host my Frogspawn

You know you can mod the 6025 easily to double the output?
I haven't looked into it, but I believe you just snip out every other plastic grate piece. Might be worthwhile to look it up.

I also go apx 6 green frilly mushrooms and 1 lavander mushroom, I may have 2 or 3 more green frilly muchrooms because there was a few ready to split when I first got them, Ive seen one small shroom floating arround my tank so I just hope that it settled and found a nice spot too call home. I just made a DIY frag rack so next time I see if one is ready to split I'll be ready for it! Here are a few more full tank shots.

More tank shots.
Lucky right after I started the tank my English Bulldog (Pablo) fathered a litter a puppies and my fiance gave me the stud fee to go into the tank so that lifted a lot of the fiancial burden. This is his litter and me. Next time his stud fee's going back into another bulldog!
