what makes a rimless rimless?

I've been told the integrity of a tank will be degraded if the center brace of a tank is removed. There are rimless thank without any support. What makes those rimless thank holding up without support?

The way they are designed and built, glass thickness and the type of silicone used.

Usually tanks with no brace can only be found in smaller sizes... once they start getting bigger they may use "eurobracing" which is a 3" or so glass brace around the perimiter. Rimless tanks are normally made of thicker and higher quality glass too.

Feeling condescending instead of helpful today Jon?

viodea, ignore hahn, he can be rather full of himself at times.

As the others above have pointed out, rimless tanks are designed a bit differently. The glass panels are much thicker to keep them from bowing. The thicker glass also creates a much larger bonding surface for the silicone.

The top edges of the glass are eased and polished to make them stronger and less vulnerable to damage, and in some cases the panels are tempered to give them more strength.

It is not advisable to yank the trim off of a standard AGA or similar aquarium, it is there for a reason

Since when is just plain being silly being "full of one's self"? Just stating the obvious... nothing personal.

It's my fault not stating the question precise enough. I should've said "What are design & construction different between a rimless and regular tank that make it holding up without center brace or rim?"

Your question was just fine. That is not the first time that Jon has taken the opportunity to give somebody a little jab. He knows very well how to word something or use emoticons to indicate humor.

What I don't understand is why these tanks are called "rimless"?

By definition, ALL tanks have a rim.

These tanks are "braceless"

Yes, braceless is a much better choice of words. I fear it [rimless]is going to stick just like "micro" bubbles.

Do you think 1/2" glass for a cube like mine be thick enough for a rimless/brace-less?
