Where is the sump? I just finished my new set up yesterday with the sump in the stand and am disappointed with the noise coming out of the thing. Go for a "quiet one" in my opinion, think I will purchase one right away after hearing the one I got sound like a Chainsaw in my dining room. Also, oversize a bit but make sure you throw in a ball or gate valve to regulate the output. That way you don't have to be too concerned with the "assumed" capacity of your overflow.

its in the stand below the tank. ive read some reviews about several pumps that makes noises. but im pretty sure it all depends on your setup. im looking into buying a return pump this weekend and i have several choices but not too sure which one is the best. Mag Drive, Rio, Tunze Recirculation Pumps, Quite One Pumps or Eheim

How big is your sump? I like my eheim 1260. A 1262 might be a better option depending on how big your sump is.

Post your "luck" per say. As posted above, I have a noisy "RIO 17HF", and would love to know how the MAG makes out! For a new set up I just built, the noise drives me nuts!

I would go with an Eheim 1262. An equivalent OceanRunner pump would also work well.

thanks everyone for all the help. i guess its my luck that a friend of mine is getting rid of a quiet pump 4000 but im still gonna buy a mag drive pump. unless the quiet pump does the job that that will do. i will keep everyone updated on the outcome

I have used mag pumps with no problem, they make little noise and require little maint. I have a mag 12 on my 140.
