why won't my ricordeas finish splitting?
i have several ricordeas in my tank and the majority have at least two mouths, if not three. however, none of them have finished splitting and i've had them for months, they're all doing well though, i even feed them from time to time. all my parameters are good, just wondering why it's taking so long. thanks

ricordeas in general, particularly the floridias are slow growers when compared to other mushrooms. you can help them along by having them attach to two small rocks. secure one rock to alarger one and allow the other to hang down. this will strech the tisue and speed the division. this process is called induced longitudinal fission. for more detailed info see insert by Daniel Knop Coral Magizine vol.4 number4 inset on pg36 hope it helps.

Hmmm... they're not splitting? Have you tried asking them nicely?
Seriously though, they'll split with time. You just need to be patient. Keep doing what you're doing, and you'll eventually see the "fruits of your labor" so-to-speak. If you really, really want them to split then you could always just rip them. Make a small slice with a razor blade at the point where they have begun splitting. Then simply rip it the rest of the way. A rough tear allows for faster healing (compared to the overly-smooth slice of a blade), and such trauma can actually increase growth rates in some corals for short periods of time. A razor blade will help them split.
