Do you need the drain on the far right side? If there is no need I would get rid of it. I think it is going to be kind of noisey becouse you have water falling to that "T".

The reason for the lower durso was in case there was a wavebox being used. With the 2 seperate overflow boxes a wavebox would more than likely cause a surge effect. If there is not enough water in the overflow box between surges you could end up w/ breaks in your water supply to the skimmer which would not allow you to skim properly.

With that said though the last drawing will work

Let me look and see if I have a pic of the drain set up on my tank. I have one overflow but it may give ideas.

here is a pic of my old system. You can see the drain on the left is slightly lower and comes out and goes to a ball valve going to a barbed fitting into flex hose. This system had a A200 2x1260 on it.

here is my new tank. I'm not feeding a ext. skimmer here but it could be transformed easy enough

This is how I've done my A-150. Why can't you do it this way and get a bigger return pump to increase gph?

I simply connected one of the overflows to a "T" connection and ran the water directly to the skimmer(the skimmer sits inside my sump). I added two true unions so I could move the skimmer feed right or left, and up and down. This allows some flexability in skimmer placement down the road, should the need arise. The "T" simply diverts any excess water flow directly to my filter sock. Of course, the ball valve allows me to control water flow to the skimmer. Make sure you get a good ball valve. Not those cheap ones at Home Depot or Lowes. The really good ones allow for exceptional fine tuning of your H & S. I have a center double overflow in the Tech tank, but you could rig something for corner overflow as well.

Having two durso's in the same overflow box would be a different matter altogether. In that case the lower would get a more constant flow and the higher could take care of the rest if needed.

If they are in separate overflows, I don't think the height difference matters.

This isn't to scale but here is the plumbing I bought.

Hopefully all works well.

I got it all replumbed and for whatever reason air is purging into the skimmer.

Anyway I can purge that air out? The skimmer level seems to be staying the same but I can't imagine the large bubbles can be good.

I don't follow. What do you mean by air purging?

The water entering the skimmer also has air going in. The bubbles are rather large and when they hit the skimmer the disturb the other bubbles.

The refugium feed is actually helping get rid of those bubbles so it might be okay.

Basically the durso's also let air in as it drains and that air is going to the refugium and skimmer.

I see. Do you have any photos of of the installation?

Here is how I dry fitted mine. On the right you can see the elbow for the water to spill over into the refugium. I just didn't install the refugium section yet as I'm not sure exactly were i want it to drain just yet.

That looks great. I'll see if I can't get you a picture.

Of course my changes didn't really come without penalty. One of my bulkheads broke and I found out each overflow holds about 5 gallons.

Do you have the ball valve on the skimmer side? If this were the case I think you could have a lower drain pipe...no durso. You should be able to close the ball valve on the skimmer feed to the proper feed rate then the water level in the skimmers' overflow box should level out to the overflow teeth. This will put the back pressure on the valve and not allow air to enter the drain pipe.

I wonder if it may be good to have your ball valve as close to your skimmer as well.

Chad

I have both overflow drains tied together. The ball valve controller the skimmer feed is about 6" from the skimmer entry. I actually have it running wide open too.

It seems since the refugium is getting the bulk of the air now the skimmer is actually doing better. Hopefully it stays that way!

I've been running the H&S A250-2x1260 on my 650g system for several months now with no problems. Today however, I noticed that the water level in the riser has begun to fluctuate as much as 2" when the unit is running. Is this a sign that one (or both) of the pumps need a cleaning or is it symptomatic of something else?

Yes dirty pumps could be a cause of the problem. If allowed to go too long it can and will damage the pump.

This question goes out to anyone running a skimmer externally.

Any have problems with the skimmer overflowing the collection cup all of a sudden? If so, how do you deal with it? I considered drilling the cup for a remote collection but I know it is not frowned upon.

Some skimmers do not like new salt water and can cause them to overflow. I found mine have been OK if I added new salt mix after the skimmer during a water change. Thats' worked good for me, now I just have the skimmer included in the maint. mode of my controller and it shuts the skimmer down when I do maint.

Getting ready to replumb my H&S A250. I am going to use a single 1.5 inch Durso for this. All the water from my tank will be fed into the skimmer and then to the sump. SHould I put a bypass on the plumbing or just go straight to the skimmer?

A150 is an external skimmer and is not effected by water level. If it is 150-f2001 ten inches is just fine.
