Wink Pineapple sponges, enough already!

I have a fairly young tank (10 months) and about 5 months into it, I noticed 2 or 3 of these little sponges growing. Now there are thousands of them growing all over the live rock, some of them even growing into each other forming a big mass about the size of my thumb.

I am just curious as to whether these guys can overtake after awhile? I know they are harmless filter feeders and my fish dont eat them, not even when there is one floating around in the water.

So whats the deal with these guys?

I have several of those in various places on my live rock, but nothing like what you describe. I suppose I'd probably just leave them be if they aren't currently causing any "overcrowding" problems, and just cross that bridge when you get there. And hey, you could always go with a sort-of "theme tank" idea and stick spongebob stickers all over the glass and just tell everybody that you actually INTENDED the tank to look like that!

I find they almost always grow in areas of lower lighting and reduced flow... what type of lighting do you have on the tank, and what type of flow? these may need to be bumped up. They flourish on my sump walls and in the overflows.

I will second that one. None in my DT and plenty in the cheato in my sump. In my 20, there was some on a home made concrete base thingy. They grew on that too. I placed it in front of a power head, not too close mind you, and whala, they were about gone in a week.

Just some food for thought.

I noticed the same thing about the lighting, I have more of them growing on the under side of rocks than the top.

And as far as flow, I have quite a bit. I have 2 Koralia 3's, a MaxiJet 1200, the 350 gph HOB filter, and the HOB skimmer. This is in a 55 so its suffice I beleive.
