If it's a Pistol it should be OK. If it is a mantis it needs to come out. Maybe go in the sump or find someone who wants it. You can try baiting a glass jar with a piece of shrimp at night and lean it on an angle on the rock work. See if you can catch it. Do you have sand or a bare bottom? If sand you should see some tunneling if it is a pistol.

I have never heard of a mantis making a clicking sound. Pistol shrimps have 2 claws, one bigger than the other. It burrows itself in the sand, usually under a rock.

this is a mantis.

I have already found a few mantis...Thanks for the pic way more colorfull than the ones I found...

So "Clicking" must be a pistol from the claw to stun prey? If he/she is ok to keepand I dont have to rid of it..I wonder what its eating?

mantis are fine if they are small....not as bad as people say imo. Pincers can be dangerous.

Just don't take it out and flush it. give it to someone who wants it or the pet store

could be. I have mantis in rocks and pistol shrimp. When the mantis is in a rock it is usually smashing the rock to make their home. no idea if that is common, but seems what mine do.

Hey i have 2 pistal shrimp and they really dont seem to make to clicking noise at all..they are pretty small though. Hearing the sounds means you have one of them( pistal or mantis) but i know mantis shrimp pack a much stronger punch. IT would sound like your glass is about to crack, but their have been less then 12 cases ever recorded of them actually breaking the glass. The only way to tell for sure is if your fish or inverts start to come up missing.
that means its probably a mantis

Do you have any clown fish in there?? My cinnamon clown makes a clicking noise at night (sometimes during the day). I have only seen her do it once but I hear it all the time.

My boyfriends pistol can get pretty loud. We heard it from another room.

Have you decided what you think it is yet?
