Looking for a VERY Quiet Return Pump
I currently have a Mag 7 return pump which I am not impressed with the noise that it makes. I want to upgrade to something that is quieter.
Looking for a submersible pump in the 600-700 GPH range. What would you recommend? Also, something that doesn't give off a lot of heat. I have heard that the Eheim's are good....maybe the 1260 model? There is a large price difference between the Eheim's and Mag Drive...maybe this is the quality that shows in the price tag?? |

I can say that the eheim is a very quiet pump. I have a mag 7 on my 75 and it is very loud. My 40 breeder has an eheim and you can't even hear it running.

Eheim will make a huge difference in noise and heat. I dumped the Mag 9 on my old 90 system and went with a Eheim 1262 and noticed a major decline in noise and a little less heat also. I used the bigger pump since I also fed a chiller off it and lost pressure in the process.
Yeah you will pay a bit more for them

Yep.....my mag 7 is even "floating" in the water due to some supports that I have lifted with. Not touching any part of the sump and it is still humming loud.....

Eheims are great....well worth it IMO. Every mag pump I've had was noisy.....that's why I use them now to only mix water or in my pond outside.
I know you said submersible, but if you think of reworking your plumbing, Velocity or Posiedon T series pumps are dead silent.

if you have the coin and really do not want to hear anything whatsoever......get a Royal Exclusiv Red Dragon pump. They are pricey, but totally worth it. They have a teflon coating so they rarely get any kind of buildup to boot.

Dont forget about Quiet-one pumps. Excellent pump, low heat, no noise, reliable, affordable.

Eheim. I have a 1262 return pump and a 1262 skimmer pump -- I set them on silicone hot pads and they're quieter than my lighting.

I like my Quiet One, it's very efficient too. Mine uses around 30 watts although it is restricted a bit.

as Alex said, Quite Ones are cheap, and quiet.
The good thing about them is that you can get them from Petsmart for like $50, don't have to order it online. |

I would NOT recommend a larger quiet one pump. I've had 3 of these in the two biggest models and they are LOUD. My buddy has one in his garage cause even submersed it was too loud in his house.

I switched from a mag to a Quiet One and dropped 3 degrees of my tank temp.
I thought the heat was coming from my lights. |

+1 on Eheim.
I run my 1260 return external just resting on suction cups(not stuck, just resting). I have to put my ear to it to hear it running. Very cool running as well!!!

eheims. I have 2 1262's as my return pumps and also 2 1260's connected to my H&S Skimmer. To be honest, I hear my maxijet 1200's more from inside my tank that sit on rocks vibrating more than I do the 4 eheims in my sump under the tank..
