Bleaching

My cynarina started to bleach from its centre after months of placing it on the sandbed. My torch coral melted off at some parts and some tentacles are bleaching (with me for near a year). Colt coral also started to shrink after 2 weeks of nice poly extension. What is going on ? Is the light not enough ? I am running 4x39W T5s with individual reflectors on a 2 feet tall 90 gal tank. I must say that the reflectors are not perfect though. Anyone please help here thanks.

Oh and what type of lights are you using and the photo period that you have them on?

salinity 1.026
day temp 79-80 night temp up to 85 (chiller is off at night)
Dose kalwasser and grotech alkalinity, ABC
Lights are DIY T5s with ATI tubes 2 blue+ 2 AB
Lights on for 8 hours

Those corals I mentioned are at the halfway depth and lower. That was why I thought the problems could be linked with the lights but without a parmeter I cannot confirm.

That may not be enough light on a 2 foot tall tank, but I don't know much about T5's. Your temperature variation isn't healthy for any of your inhabitants. If necessary, run your chiller 24 hours/day or look into adding some quieter fans to help stabilize the temp. That's all I've got.

Let me make sure that I understand what has happened, your cynarina has been on the bottom for months, with no changes ie. lighting, flow, placement, and it suddenly starting bleaching? Colt corals, like most leathers, will close for a few days and it is nothing to worry about normally. You may be looking at some sort of pest that is harming some of your corals. It's really hard to say without pictures or more information.

If the inhabitants are used to that temperature swing, it isn't hurting them. Organisms are used to that swing in their natural environment. Ever been snorkeling, or even swimming in a lake and swam into a really patch of water, or a warm patch (that wasn't peed in)? It happens on the reef as well. My daily temperature swings from 78 or 79 to 83 or 84 every day. Everything is used to it, and doing well.

If you are looking to control the temperature swings, a cheap clip on fan from Wal-Mart that is on the same lighting cycle (or on 24/7) will evaporate more water which will cause the water to cool. Remember that you'll have to top off more frequently though.
