tattoo

So I am thinking of getting a tattoo to represent my love for the marine life that we all keep and cherish. I want to get it in japanese kanjii style symbols and have a rough translation of "water keeper" "keeper of the ocean" etc.... something along those lines. Jw if anyone can direct me to a reputable site in which I can get a translation into symbols!

Offhand I don't know any but I can recomend that you are very careful with what you choose and who you have do it. I'm a little rusty but I'm pretty sure that the verb comes before the subject, so it would be written as "Keeper of water" Also, the slightest mistroke is a spelling error or the equvalent of having "Teh" on your arm.

As I said, I'm rusty but there is a difference in sentence structure over there

Yeah, I figured that would be an issue. Thanks for the heads up though. Anyone else have an idea?

Only idea I can give you is don't get any "words" tattooed on you lol. My best friend, who is a tattoo artist, always tells his clients:

"If you aren't willing to have the word(s) written on you in english, then you shouldn't have it done in japanese/chinese."

Also, if the artist isn't japanese.... I wouldn't trust him to tattoo any japanese language on me lol.

Read this site/blog. If you still want the lettering, and trust your artist.... THEN go ahead.

I've seen some pretty crazy ocean and reef themed tattoos.

I'm sure the Waterkeeper here would love it if you had his screename tattooed on your arm though. A sort of Get out of Jail free card...

Keeper of the ocean; water keeper; etc would just look wierd in plain english to me... the symbols have a much more unique look and do not take as much characters.... that is the main reason for choosing to have it in that writing.

Have you had any tattoos done before?

I'd definitely recommend getting whatever scene you want done first. Let that sit on you for a month. Then decide on anything else.

Also, a good thing to do to determine if you really want a tattoo....

Get a picture of exactly what you want. Carry the picture folded up in your wallet and look at it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a month or two.

If you aren't tired of looking at the picture by then.... you have made the right decision.

no tattoos yet. I really only want two of them for my to passions: the ocean, and teaching/ leading young kids. Both of which I would like in the japanese lettering. I would probably get both on my back one below the other so it can be covered up very easily... unless of course I am at the beach or something lol

I would agree that it will be way cooler in english.

Ultimately it's up to you. I'd really recommend getting anything kanji related though. On the sole grounds of I know how many people go in to my buddies place to have them covered up. It's trendy, and people get tired of it after a couple months.

If it really makes YOU happy, then get it done and enjoy it. That's ultimately all that really matters. Just do your research, and go with an artist you trust. I don't want to see a picture of your tattoo on that blog I posted earlier lol.

You will end up wanting more than two though. Tattoos are addicting just like reefs. If I had enough money for both I would probably have my entire back done already lol.

My 180 Gallon tank is priority now though.

I am not familiar with Thai or Russian at all. I think the Kanjii symbols are so popular because they look "cool". If I am getting something on my skin for life, I want it to be appealing in a way lol. Not to say Thai or Russian is not appealing!!

That second link is great.... thanks. I know that tattoos are addicting; my friend just got one recently and already wants more lol. I hope to try and steer clear of that addiction.

dont do kanji. its been done a bazillion times. at this point there is nothing creative about it. as reef keepers we are unique individuals.what we create in the tank is true art. i would highly suggest interviewing a few well qualified tattooist and ask them what there ideas are for a tattoo that could represent your passion for this hobby.get original with it!!! i would suggest a huge needle and syringe filled with fish and corals in it with some money going up in flames near a vein. hahaha

Lol to the money burning up!!! You are right about the creativity side of it. If I can come up with something more unique I am open to it. I drew my friends tat ( 4 years of art in hs) but i cant seem to think of spmething for myself. So any suggestions are welcome. I am not getting a large piece done though. Nothing larger than about 5 to 6 inches preferrably.

I always wanted a tattoo on my bicep of a ripped and muscular Uncle Sam flexing his bicep and wearing torn blue jeans with a torn American flag over his upper body. He would also be smoking a cigar made of $100 bills and there would be a bald eagle over his should screeching. Preferably there would also me a nuclear missile in there somewhere. Most importantly, on Uncle Sam's bicep would a be a tattoo of the tattoo I just described.

never had the guts to get it though...

I agree. I've always wondered why not some other language. I had a friend born in Hong Kong and he was always like "you don't see me going and getting english words on my arm". Kanji drives me insane because it is too overdone, too trendy, and IMO dumb. But that is just me and my oppinion. Like someone said get what makes you happy but a word of advice don't get kanji. I always thought barbed wire or other arm bands were cool till EVERYONE got them and now they are a dime a dozen and a lot of people dislike them. Tattoos are so personal do what means something to you in YOUR style not what everyone else is getting.

I have 5 and regret the way I go the one on the back of my arm. It is supposed to say "faithful" in hebrew...well its upside down because I flipped the letters up and down and forgot that Hebrew is read right to left...and I supposedly have a letter out of place. It WILL get covered someday when I do 1/4 sleeves in stained glass on that arm. I didn't know and took someones advice....next time I'll be 100% sure.

You cant get the sea dragon done in that last link- Ive been saving up cash for years to get one of those done on MY back! lol

I understand the artistic value of japanese kanji, but unless you have an asian background, or strong cultural connection, why get a symbol tattooed on you that you cant read, and doest otherwise describe your passion?

Why not illustrate your love of reefs and water with something explicitly related and recognizable? I happen to love the biology behind the reef, so the primary focus of my tat is the internal anatomy of a stony coral polyp (with some copepods around it for size/context). I eventually plan on getting a series of small scenes that show either uniquely evolved animals (dragonettes, leafy seahorse, nudibranchs, etc) or that have interesting behaviors (shrimp-goby pairing, banggai-urchin pairing, etc).

Get whatever the heck you want- its not my skin- just keep in mind it should be something you'll be able to relate to forever, even when you dont have a tank anymore, even when cuniform becomes the trend over kanji, even when youre 60 years old and so wrinkly that the kanji now looks like some kind of profanity.

Not that you asked my opinion.. lol.. sorry

BTW- the guy I plan on having do my backpiece (eventually) is Deano Cook, at Psycho Tattoo in Marietta Georgia. I would STRONGLY suggest him. Might be a haul for you depending on where you live, but its probably worth a weekend trip to get something that permanent in such good quality. He does stunning reef/aquatic work. Check out his portfolio:
http://www.psychotats.com/newweb/pag.../DeanoCook.htm

Fair warning.. its a tattoo site... not all his work is kid friendly.. lol
