Best Bang for Your Buck Powerheads?
I have three Aquaclear 402 powerheads from previous freshwater tanks. I don't believe they will be efficient enough for a 68 gallon (36" x 18" x 24") softie coral reef with maybe a few LPS. Which power heads are the best bang for your buck, will keep my corals happy, and will stop detirius from settling for too long. How many powerheads should I buy? Thanks.

Maxi jets 1200 will be best bang for your buck, you will need 2 or 3 for your tank.

Does the flow rotate from left to right automatically or do you have to adjust it to one fixed position?
How turbulent is the flow? Stronger than the Aquaclear 402's? What kind of modifications and how much do they cost?

I'd say maxi-jet with stream mod...
http://reefcentral.com/forums/showth...hreadid=717034 for your tank you'd need like 1 or 2 of the 900 and get the flow of any big stream PH for less than half the price |

I like the MJ900 over the MJ1200
MJ1200 = 295 GPH 20W MJ900 = 230 GPH 8.5W You could have (2) MJ900, 460 GPH using 17W Vs 295 GPH 20W with a MJ1200.

Any other ideas? I've heard bad things about the SEIO's.

Is it too strong for soft corals? How many Seios would I need? What type?

you stated you already had 3 aquaclear 402's?
those are 400 gph each, that gives you 1200 gph overall. thats more then enough.

Actually, the aquaclear power head boxes say that it's 270 gph each. I originally thought aquaclear 402 = 400 gph.

Since my tank is a 68 gallon, does that mean I need a total of 1360 GPH (20 times per hour turnover rate)?

Could I buy 3 maxi-jet 1200 and not do any modifications to them? Would that be efficient?

Use what you have for now, save for the Tunze -- you will very likely end up with them eventually anyway. If you want it now, the Seios are a good buy as long as you don't turn it off too much (or ever).
