Euro-reef or ASM skimmer?

I'm looking into the ASM G3 @$240and Euro-reef RS180@$300(newest line) both rated for 180 Gallons. I have a 125 BB with 20G sump. Which one should i go for? I know Euro-reef has a better reputation but this is their newest model so i'm kinda leery.

The ASM is a good skimmer. Best bang for the buck. But the ER will be your better bet here. The chamber is larger and it comes with a more powerful pump. The sp4 is much stronger than the sp3(sedra 5000). So here you are getting a larger, more powerful, better built skimmer for only $60 bucks more. And if you are buying the RS model, that probably means you are getting it from your LFS (unless you're buying it used). In this case you can avoid many of the customer service issues you might have because you can just deal with your LFS. Oh yeah, ASM tank ratings are FAR from being correct.

where are you getting a ER rs180 for $300. PA has them priced at over $600

PA doesn't sell the RS models. they sell the CS models. RS models can only be found at retail stores, not online vendors.

I love my Euroreef. It pulls more gunk out of my tank than any other skimmer I've used. My problem was too much foam. I just ordered an airline control valve for $5 from H2O and their customer service has been excellent. Euroreef is #1 in my book

You're right. If I was in the market for a skimmer I would pick a Reef Octopus instead of ER or ASM. But given the choices ER OR ASM, I would go with ASM. Just can't justify the price for ER when the only difference is the acrylic they used.

People who have been using Reef Octopus are seemingly very happy with it.

Happy ER CS-180 (Marine Depot) user here, and the service has been excellent the one time I needed it. I've owned it for two months now, and it skims my 125 quite nicely. ASM might be a better value, Octopus might be a better value yet.

But, if I were to do it all over again, I'd buy another CS-180. It's an incredible piece of equipment.

I was going to order one also. $5 for the part, but how much did they try and charge you for shipping? Shipping for me was like $15!

I have an ER so I'm partial to them. You want to look into the quality of the contruction and material also... These things need to be cleaned regularly and if it's built or contructed poorly, it may not last as long.

I have a G3 on my 90 w/30 gallon sump and the only knock that I have heard gainst it is that it can sometimes leak b/c of the type of plastic that they use compared to the ER. I have not had this problem and if you are using in sump it should not make a difference.

Thats an RC model. Not an RS model. RS models are only sold in retail stores. RC models are recirculating skimmers and CS are are available at both online and at retail stores. Trust me, I've owned them all.

ASM G3 user here. My next skimmer will be the ASM G4x skimmer. I've been very happy with mine especially after doing the gate valve mod.

I have one of each. From what I can tell, the same sized chamber, height and pump will get you the same results.

If you can get a used one, or one that fits perfectly into your space. Maybe to support a local store who sells ER and not ASM. There are a lot of reasons, but I don't think that performance is really one of them.

G2X user here. I've never had an issue with it, great performance and it doesn't need any adjustments once it's broken in.
