Wellsophyllia Brain

I have a Wellsophyllia Brain . In my 55 gallon tank is was huge under power compacts. Now in my 125 under metal halides and pc actinics it always stays small. Although when the lights are out it puffs up. While I am on this subject I have a large toadstool leather that when in my 55 the polyps were always out and since its been in the 125 they hardly come out. I have had the 125 for about 6 months now. Is it possible that its too much light for them ? thanks

How long have the corals been on the new setup? How different is this 125 to the 55 as far as equipment, parameters...? Remember you changed more than just lighting on this corals, you changed them from a system to another, it's not as simple as just lighting.

I have 4" sand bed same as the 55, at least 120 lbs LR. Relitive to the 55. Stronger powerheads. I have 2 Sieo'3 an 1100 and an 820. I had a fluval 340 and a seaclone 150 protein skimmer in the 55. I now have an aqua c remora and a proclear wetdry with 2 outlets , that I have LR in instead of bioballs. For lighting I had 6 55 watt pc's and now I have 3- 150 watt 15k HQI's and 4- 96 watt actinics. In this system I have been using B-ionics buffer system which I didnt in the 55. I never really checked the calcium in the 55 but the 125 is 400-450. Some corals are very healthy. All of my zoos died. I have a squamosa clam that is healthy about 8 ". The 125 has been up for about 6 months.

Sometimes they will go through cycles.. where they close up. At least mine did.... it also might just be an adjustment period. You made quite a jump in lighting so it might be adjusting still. Do you have it on the sand or the LR? Might consider putting it in a little shade or moving it down a bit.

Going from PC to MH is a big change for corals
I have a brain on the sand under 250w MH DE on the sand & it inflates just fine
Sometimes it's really big, other times its not
It seems to go thru cycles

Your corals need time to adjust to the new light
Did you shorten the lighting cycle to allow them to adjust?
Raise the lights up off the tank?
Or use screening to block some light?

These are all methods used to acclimate a tank inhabitants to a more powerful lighting change

Good suggestions... I'd be willing to bet its just a light issue. Its not opening up because its either getting a little 'baked' or it feels it getting plenty as it is... If it were me, I would use a cut out above the spot it sits on the sand on the lights using cardboard and provide some shade.. enough light will get around it, but at a lesser intesity and then gradually cut that cardboard down over a period of weeks so it adjusts slowly. The thing you want to avoid is its spewing out its insides and bleaching...

thanks for the info. Unfortunatly I didnt read up on lighting changes and I didnt acclimate them to the new lighting. Is that why my green fussy mushrooms look bleached out ?Stupid mistake. I have a lot of other corals that are doing great. Its been over six months now so should I just leave it as is or cut down on lighting time ?

Might be worth a try... but do it slowly, like an hour a day to start. You don't want what is doing well to get messed up. The shading example I gave you might help out too. I'd try that before drastically reducing the overall lighting to the tank since you an isolate the effects better.
