IMO & IME your best bet is a smaller return pump such as a mag 5 at a max. I've had good luck with mag pumps. Then use a closed loop or something like a Seio in the display for the bulk of your flow.

i'm using an eheim 1250 on my 29g, but i ordered a mag3 yesterday, which should be about the same flow...maybe a tad more. i supplemented flow w/ 3 bukheads at the bottom of the tank blowing through the liverock structure (tank is bare bottom).

it's a virgin tank...established friday.

a buddy of mine has a spare 29g, so i'm going to drill it as soon as the diamond bit gets here...hopefully this week...and trade him tanks. i'll post pics of the overflow i put on it. i'm going to use two 1" bulkheads to help keep down any possible gurgling. ...although the tank is darn quiet as is with the external overflow box.

Here is my 30G AGA drilled the bottom yesterday and installed my durso today...

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/...94DSC03300.jpg

I was planning on a Mag5 for my return. I have to build a sump to fit under my cabinet....

According to the calculator for 600gph you need about 9" of overflow. I am going with a corner box 6"w x 3"D.

Steve2k6,
Where did you get your cabinet for your 30G? Could you show a picture of it?

Got an email from Dorothy at All-Glass--she said if the tag on the bottom of the tank is white, then none of the panels are tempered.

What do you guys think of this as a sump return pump?

http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewIt...product=LG2123

It should be more efficient and last much longer than mags.

I found the crack in my sump tonight. It was right on a seam. I reinforced all seams with weld-on #16. Should have my 29G going by Sunday. This is not the tank I'm going to drill. The tank I'm going to drill will replace it.

I think the first thing I'm going to buy is the bulkheads.
Now for the bulkheads in the bottom of the corner overflow--one for drain to sump, and one for sump pump return through the bottom of the tank and out through the side of the corner overflow; do I need single threaded bulkheads or double threaded bulkheads?

Should Iwaki pumps be fastened to the tank stand?

external pumps should have something between them and the stand to absorb vibrations. I use extra large rubber feet bettween the pump and a peice of wood and sit it in the stand.

Sorry it took so long CM. I got the babineta my LFS. It was about $150 or so. It is light oak and has 2 doors on the front. I wll post some pics today. I have made quite a bit of progress..I have drilled and plumbed the tank. I made an internal overflow out of 1/8 Black acrylic that I bent.

How do you connect the pump to the sump? It must be more than just screwing it into its bulkhead?

There's a standpipe kit at wetdry with a 1" drain, but the bulkhead is 3/4". Does this mean the bulkhead is doublethreaded?

how do you want to connect it to your sump? drill a hole in the sump, put a bulk head on it, and run a line into the external pump. Make your you put a valve on it so you can throttle back the pump if need be. if it was me i would just use a mag for the return pump.

The bottom can be drilled. AG/Oceanic bottoms are not tempered. Tempered can also be drilled with an abrasion bit=very slow but it works...

How do the different standpipes for corner overflow rank for noise? Such as durso, stockman, or just a straight pipe with a bunch of holes drilled in the bottom, etc.?

Anybody know about how much it would cost to have a 29 gallon cabinet and canopy custom built by a cabinet maker? Any guess within the nearest one hundred dollars? I'm talking oak.

Please not that the 1" drain is the standpipe.

Christian emailed me to say his 3/4" bulkheads are thread x slip.

Looks like all his 3/4" bulkheads are schedule 80 which takes a bigger glass drill than standard pvc.
