I just got Kauai Live sand!!

My grandparents just got back from Kauai and brought about 4 lbs of sand from a beach on the south side. Its a nice brown color and is really soft feeling. I'll post some pics of it here: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...hreadid=815801

I'm not stupid, I know the difference between live/wet and dry/"dead" sand. Thanks for the observation.

"bad hawaiian taboo"

Luckily that is only with lava rocks. Well, I hope so anyway

That's right - only lava rock - should have a bunch of new critters soon - by the way, the legal limit is only 1 cup/1 Lb. of live sand from Hawaii - good thing customs didn't see it or take it seriously - if even one coral polyp found by customs, very bad things could happen.

Just some corrections here:

The limit is one gallon per person per day.

There is no "customs" to go through, Hawaii is a state in the US ... not a foreign country!

The problem comes if you are caught collecting the sand .. if you collect more than the legal limit per day, you are looking at a substantial fine and possible jail time.

Sand along the surf line has very little in the way of "critters" in it.

The only way to get caught leaving the state is when your baggage is x-rayed by state ag officials.

Aloha!
JCD

Actually, the bag that the sand was in got searched and the "officials" searching it didnt care about the sand.

Do the viniger test - Put some of the sand in a cup, and pour some viniger on it. If it Fizzes, or bubbles a little bit, then its calcium based, and therefore what you want in your tank. If not, then its probably Silicate sand, witch is no good for reef tanks. If you do use it, I would suggest seeding it with some live sand.

You mean silicA sand...not silcATE sand. And just to clear things up, silica sand is inert, so there is no harm it will cause to your tank. Silicates, however, are a different matter. Understand the difference.

I agree with Delbeek: unless your grandparents went out beyond the surf and dove down to collect the sand...there's not really anything 'live' about it.

Thanks omni2226 and others. Sometimes I regret even posting because people always have to be nitpickers just like you said. I never asked if it was silica sand (which I have in my tank, so I know the difference between silica and calcium based). I already have "live" sand in my tank, why would I need to or want to seed the stuff from Hawaii? I just thought it was cool that my grandparents did that for me and thought maybe some of you guys would think the same thing. Well, maybe I was wrong. Guess I shouldn't post about good fortune on this site anymore, seems to me that people thrive off of misfortune.

I like good debate...but this is rediculous...If you said silicone i would know what you meant. Congrats on the sand, too often in the pet trade we don't really know where our stuff comes from. I'm interested in biotope aquaria myself and am having a very difficult time finding organisms (mainly molluscs) that are native to the Great Barrier Reef (which is dying by the way LOL). By the way, the surf zone does promote life in the sand as well. So live sand from Hawaii it is!

we need a:

"I want a pat on the back"

forum. and ban those who ever post anything other than: "good work" or "NICE! I'm jealous, you're my idol, you're like a god, so fortunate, wow, you've just become the next 6 foot poster above my bed"

hehe =)

but in all goodness, hawaii sand, that's something you can gloat about in your threads.

"Hey what kind of sand do you have?"

"I got it from Kauai"

Seroiusly, that'd be great.

what kind of bacteria / critters would you get in hawaiian sand?

Charles Delbeek, a rather well known expert in the area of tropical reefs in general and Hawaiian waters in particular, didn't say that it had no life, just that it contained little in the way of critters.

Also, A LOT of folks read these threads, so ALL of the information was probably useful to someone, even if it wasn't what the thread originator wanted to hear.

FWIW,
Kevin

critters are sparse, but bacteria wise? any differences?

i think what I'm asking is, is bacteria / critters from one area better than from another?

congrats on your hawaii sand. who cares if it's live or not? that's really cool of your grandparents. aren't grandparents great? mine let me use their condo in maui for my honeymoon. man, i can hear maui calling now . . . i'd much rather be there than here in the bay where it's been raining for over a mo. now.

Unless there is some unusual contaminant, then bacteria type would be pretty much the same. Now, if you have some weird pollution or metals, then different bacteria might well be present. But for the sake of argument, the bacteria in the Hawaii sand should be fine, unless the grandparents collected it from a polluted inlet or harbor.
