remora pro performance
I have a remora pro with a mag7 driving it hanging on my 20 gallon sump/refuge. Couple of questions: Is the mag7 too large (the remora is performing, i think, better than it did with the mag3 it came with, but the skimmate is very wet) for this skimmer? I've read that too large a pump can cause it to not operate efficiently.
The pump is sitting on the bottom of the sump. Would it be better to have it near the the surface of the water (the area the pump is in is about 9"wx7"lx12"d and that's where the overflow drains into the sump)? Thanks |

I currently have a Mag 5 on mine, upgraded from a Mag 3. I'm definitely getting more skimmate from the Mag 5, I can see a lot more bubbles in the chamber too. Haven't tried a Mag 7 so can't comment on that.

the mag 3 is the recommended pump to use for the remora pro.

I emailed AquaC about that and they said that the Mag7 would be too much for the Remora Pro and produce very wet skimmate. They said a Mag 5 would be a better fit for that skimmer.

can you place the mag5 on the bottom of the tank? Instead of using a Mag3 placed directly under the Remora pro if you upgrade to a Mag5 and place the pump on the floor of the tank? I wonder if it would be comparable in performance.

Interesting. If they say a Mag 7 is too much, why do they make and sell a Tall collection cup? Somewhere on their web site I believe is actually says the tall cup is for use with a Mag 7.
I have a 7 with the tall cup on mine. A little wet on the skimmate? Yes. Consistent? Yes. I don't play with adjusting it at all anymore.

I had good performance out of a Mag3, but decided to try a Mag5 after talking to Jason (about a year ago). It is consistently dark, medium wet skimmate, and was a significant improvement over the mag3. I wouldn't bother with a mag7, I don't think you will get much more performance out of it compared to the money spent.

this was my response from AquaC:
We usually don't recommend upgrading pumps, as larger pumps can overdrive the skimmer, resulting in a very wet foam and increased bubble return to the tank. However, in high bioload situations, performance can be boosted by upgrading pumps, sometimes up to 30%. The Mag 5 can be used without any modifications or special parts, while the Mag 7 can be used with a special "high rise" cup, which is about 4" taller than the standard cup. Thanks again, and let me know if you have any other questions or comments! |
