55g Plan- external overflow, plumbing ??s
Gonna have a 55g w/20L for sump. My ASM g1x should arrive soon. Any reccomendations, links for external overflow, return pump, powerheads, and plumbing plans? Return would have @4ft up to tank, and just need moderate flow.
TIA

For a moderate flow from the return (which is the correct way to do it), on that setup, I'd use this overflow and a Mag3 pump. If you want a super quiet, very high quality pump, get an Eheim 1250.

Well if your feeling adventurous you could DIY a nice "wal-mart" betta tank overflow. Its not really a kit though $5 betta tank(for overflow) $10 drill bit (Ebay of course) $15 plumbing and you got yourself a nice drilled overflow. Let me know if you decide to use my method. Dead silent too!

Can you get the tank drilled ... might save a lot of trouble. Then just silicone in an overflow box. (Doesn't need to be drilled on the bottom if it is tempered ... you could use the side).
If you didn't want to drill it, I am sure a lfs could drill it for you ... I am not sure how much that would cost you though. -H88 |

Just to clarify.
A external overflow looks like this.... plumbed like this... There are many variations of the internal overflow like littleg mentioned calfo style internals or coast to coast and syphon overflows. Could you be more specific which you are interested in.

I guess syphon overflows was what I thinking of.

There are a couple of used Lifereef overflows on the used equipment forum.

I haven`t noticed any Lifereefs on the sell forum. How is the Amiracle one?
And the Aquacrylics?

what do you guys think of the biorocker as the wet dry filter for the sump. This looks like a good overflow

That overflow (CPR) is horrible.

i have a lifereef overflow and think its absolutely great. I also thik that you are going to want a bit larger of a pump than a mag three. I have a mag 7 being used to pump water up about 4 feet to two returns...give me about 400 gph or so.

I've owned both the Amiracle and Lifereef. Both are very good quality, very reliable products. The main difference is flow capacity. A Mag5 maxes out the Amiracle. The LR can handle a lot more flow. The Amiracle has a smaller skimmer box and takes up less space. What are you planning on using for a pump?

I plan on drilling mine Calfo Style. I think it would save alot of trouble in the future. Here's what I am going to do, but instead of sticking out 4" from the back, I'll have mine around 2-2 1/2". Photo by my dad
