Here is a problem that most of you WANT!!!
I can stand it and think that its hidious. If I could take a pic and post it without messing with the site for 20 minutes I would, just a browse and load sort of thing.
I have EVERY SINGLE KIND of macro-algae you can imagine growing in my tank and I hate it. Kelp, chaeto, caulerpa, kale and something that looks like clover. IT'S SO ANNOYING!!!!! |

Some people do. Because that is a way to atleast grow it, especially when it was all free. Then trim it back or get something to eat it. My main problem is that I wont put anything with claws into my tank. So it may be there forever.

Chaeto shouldn't be too bad to remove. Caulerpa is the devil, get it out. I only grow macros that don't shoot off and anchor in the rock, the reds are pretty tame.
I got some rock with my tank that came with feather and grape caulerpa on it. It is in a rubbermaid tub with a powerhead and heater, hopefully by the time I need to use it all of the caulerpa will be dead! GL, -A

No more will go in!” the professor blurted. “You are like this cup,” the master replied, “How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup.” Current Tank Info: 56g, 20g. |

Macroalgae in your display is ugly unless its a macroalgae-only tank.

My blue tangs totally took care of the grape caulerpa that hitchhiked on my LR. I kind of miss it.

Right, tell me how to post one without going through all the mess of going to the gallery section and adding a pic then uploading to the server then finding it, then putting it on the thread - and its done.

Yeah, about the full tank shot, not gonna happen. I just changed out the wattage on my tank about 2-3 weeks ago and my tank is still getting "adjusted" if you know what I mean. I am going to scrape a few areas of the glass clean and post a couple of pics though

Devil's Advocate, signing in and offering an alternative view. ..
First off, there's a hundred ways to run a tank, and al of them may be right. Macro algae is transporting or holding excess nutrients, phosphates, nitrates, etc., until you remove them from the tank, right? Some people empty their protein skimmer cup every day, some once a week. Stick your hand in the tank once a day and oull the stuff you don't want! Also, it won't grow if it doesn't have the nutrients it needs to grow. Skim wetter, feed less, rip out a handfull evry day, If you pull it quicker than it grows, sooner or later, it'll be gone. I've got some of the "kale", I let it grow on one rock, so the Mandarin cant ever eat the pods there, I'm BB and don't want him to run out of food. Looking at the pics of your tank, I can see what you mean. Too much of a good thing. Maybe the price you are going to pay for "nothing with claws in the tank" is more maintenance time. Good luck. Chuck. |

I'd love some leafy red macro if you have any.
The reality is that it's only growing because there's enough nutrients for it to do so. If there wasn't a constant supply of nutrients available, it would grow more slowly, or even not at all. The above post is right, if you just leave it in there, as some of it dies and decays, the nutrients are just going back into the water to feed the remaining macro. But, if you physically remove portions of it, all of it will start to grow less aggressively. |

why would you let it get that bad to begin with? pull out whatever you can and if you have a big enough tank, get a tang or something to eat the rest.

You could sell portions of the desirable macros to the lfs, maybe.
The Zoas look great though.

I'm planning on running a tank that looks just like that...
But I won't be running a skimmer. Just like you have to empty/maintain your skimmer, you'll have to prune your macro. Thing with macro is that it is silent and doesn't consume any electricity I kinda like it.

I didn't see how big that tank was. Maybe you could get a couple of small tangs, then when they get bigger, trade them for a couple of new small ones...
I pull cheato from my fuge to feed my sailfin and naso. The sailfin also took care of the small patch of microalgae I had.... |
