Does it bother you when people say 'Dori' and 'Nemo'? Why?

Sometimes when I scroll through threads I see that people are upset by non-reefers-- especially when they don't take the time to learn/understand what kind of fish Dori and Nemo truly are.

It doesn't really upset me, and put me last in line to criticize what bugs other people, but I just wanted some clarity. I didn't get into the hobby until after Finding Nemo came out, and although that movie had nothing to do with my decision, it was fun when I found out what kind of fish they showcased in the movie.

For those that it bugs, what gives?

It doesn't bug me, I mean i think people that say Nemo realize that it's a clownfish. Some don't know what Dori is, but that doesn't mean some of us should get angry. This whole hobby is one big learning experience.

It depends. "Clownfish" is easy enough to learn. I can understand why 'hippo tang' is hard to remember. [I wonder if they were named after "William," the faience hippopotamus in the Smithsonian's Egyptian collection. Right colors at least.]

If it's a person entering the hobby, it makes me stop and immediately look at the tank size under their sig. If I see no info at all under their sig, and also they're doing the Nemo-Dory bit, I am increasingly concerned that the dentist's daughter has just bought two new toys.

Sort of with Sk8r on this. I do not have a 'problem' with some one using the terms Nemo and Dori to decribe their fish, but it does cause them loose credibility with me. I imagine (prejeduce) a parent setting up a new saltwater tank for the kids, or a teen doing it on his/her own, with no or limited true knowldege of the hobby.

But at the same time, the fact that they found this sight to talk about their nemo and dori tank is a sigh of relief as they will eventually get their facts straight and progress futher into the hobby than most...who never move past the pretty 'orange and white fish' that you have to keep replaceing the 'upside down jelly fish thing'.

I don't have a problem with that, but people who can't spell anenmonney correctly should be shot and killed.

It really only bothers me when I go to a LFS and small children there are screaming "Look mommy it's Nemo!" every 3 seconds, pointing at every fish (tapping on the glass too). Sometimes they aren't even pointing at a clownfish. I've even heard a kid call a yellow tang "Bubbles".

How is this really different from calling a fish by its "common name" since it seems like every fish in the aquarium trade has 2-5 different common names-->hippo tang, pacific blue tang, regal tang, and palette surgeonfish etc...and how many "sailfin tangs" are there?

I hear "Nemo" almost every time I go to the lfs, and that's fine. The movie was great, and it spurred a lot of interest in our hobby. But I can't help but feel (like sk8r and clsanchez) that if it's coming from someone that's been in this hobby for any amount of time, it doesn't look too good.

I also have no issues with it. In fact, its what got me into this hobby. Kids loved the movie, wife wanted to get the kids a "nemo" and since I usually overkill everything I do - a reef tank was born!

My wife still ribs me about all she wanted was a couple fish - hehe - if she knew then what she knows now!

my fish are named nemo, marlin, and dori. My kids like it and I think its cute. just because I call a fish nemo doesent mean that I cannot DIY a needle wheel skimmer. My wife actually insisted on my avatar.( I told her I would get beat up on the palyground)

I know what you mean though, I was in my LFS haveing a conversation with one of the salesmen about 400W kelvin temperatures and how they vary with ballast choice, and he looked at me like I was from outerspace when I said "my nemo fish..."
I guess its just one of those things you areent susposed to say, like a goal in baseball.

I always assumed it was a more of an entertaining nickname for its species, P. hepatus.

"Nemo" and "Dory" don't really bother me. But, working in aquarium retail I can tell you a lot more that does...

I only get irritated when people call the wrong fish 'nemo' or 'dori.' I was in my LFS awhile back and a woman showed her son a tank of yellow tangs and said 'look, it's dori!' That irritated me. But other than that I don't really mind too much if people call my Ocellaris nemo, except when they start talking to it like a baby...

But to be honest, I didn't even recognize Dori as a Regal tang. Just didn't register with me for the longest time...

it makes the animal into an inanimate, indestructeble thing.... totally removes the respect of keeping the living creature alive & well.

And I call my cat Haunter... Hmmm just because I do not refer to my cat as "My Tabby" does not mean I am uneducated about cats. Guess the same can apply to fish too. If the guy (or girl) knows that a Nemo is a clownfish and a Dory is a Tang then it is fine - it is much easier to say "Dory" than the latin name or the (more confusing) common NAMES.

Hey, as long as people respect the fact that these are living creatures, they have specific needs and that it is OUR privilege to be able to keep them, then it doesn't bother me.

If someone thinks it's just another toy for their spoiled 6 year old, then I have a problem.

Why on earth would you even care what some woman you don't know and most likely will never see again in your life says to her son about who or what "dori" is

I didn't say I cared, I said it irritated me for the fact that it was obviously the wrong fish. I don't know how to explain it. I guess it was more of an 'oh my...' moment in my head.

What bothers me is when I was at the shedd aquarium the person giving a tour said , look over here we have a nemo in this tank. There were only like 2 children in the tour also.

It also bothers me when people say dori and nemo about the wrong fish. Someone called a lookdown a dori.... If you dont know what your talking about , why bother talking?

I guess it really only bothers us because we're informed. Can't really blame people for not knowing something and just stating what they believe. Freedom of speech and all that...

Irritating at time none-the-less!
