What do you feed your blue regals?

What do you guys normally feed them as staple? How often. I know occasionally they need to feed on sea weed wrap and greens soaked in garlic to boost immune system.. what are your thoughts?

I have had mine since he was like 2 weeks old, and now he is 2 years old next month! But anyway I feed green dry seaweed soaked in garlic guard twice a week, I just clip the food on a veggie clip and he goes to work. I feed my other fish brine and mysis shrimp and he also eats that twice a week! He is my favorite fish of all! amazing bold color.

thanks, Marrell.

so you basically just feed your tank 2x a week.. no daily feedings? Are you talking about the dry sea weed sheets?

Also, does your blue and yellow fight at all?

I have had mine for 6 yrs now. I feed half a sheet of nori every day, sometimes soaked in vitamins, sometimes not. Other foods include mysis, spirulina and omega 3 enhanced brine, prime reef, marine cuisine, emerald entree, formula 2, krill, plankton, ocassionally cyclopeeze mixed in, among some others... I feed one cube of one of the frozen foods about every other day. Hes a fat, happy fish .

That seems a lot of food on a daily basis, no? But thats what I want.. fat, happy fish, but my tank is still fairly new at 3+ months and i get algae growth when I feed too much. Did you have that problem at first as well?

Yes...

I added a bigger skimmer (ASM G-2), a small fuge, and a phosban reactor. That along with rinsing the food really well before feeding pretty much took care of the problem.

OH, and so there is no confusion...

In addition to the nori I add 1 cube of frozen food a day/ every other day. Be it brine, mysis, ect... I DON'T feed 1 of every cube every day/other day. That would be way overkill.

If your tank is a 55 gallon as listed in your profile its way too small for a blue hippo. I bought one about 6 months ago and he's at least doubled in size already. Never seen a fish grow so fast. My purple and yellow seem to graze alot on the rocks and eat alot of algae, but my blue stays in the water column more and eats anything I throw in the tank. I have alot of frozen food, but formula 2 flakes seem to be a good staple for for them. And my LPS corals like it too.

55 is on the small side. At any rate, I would make sure the tang gets a high proportion of zooplankton (meaty foods like mysis) in its diet versus algae. While they eat algae in the wild, they eat much more zooplankton by comparison.

i agree and thank you for pointing the tank size out (I knew this was going to arise at some point), but this 55 is my starter tank and I wanted to get familiar with the hobby first before I build my custom 300gal tank in my basement next year which is in its planning stages.

At this point I'm still doing research on the tang before I buy it (as this would be the right thing to do). I will most likely purchase a baby hippo and eventually place him in the 300 once its set up and cycled.

Thanks for the input on the feedings! I really appreciate it.

I pretty much feed mine the same way. I add some nori every day and feed the meaty foods every 2 days. Oh I also drop in some Formula 2 pellets every day. I pretty much just do that to watch the fish chase them down in the current

Yeah I purchased my Hippo when it was the size of a dime. Its in my 55g right now untill he gets a little bigger then it will get transfered to the bigger tank. I feed a sheet of nori and some prime reef everyday. Every other day I will feed either brine, mysis, or formula 1. Mine didnt eat nori at first untill I started soaking it in garlic. Now it just eats it fine. Ive had it for about a year and a half.
